Today Nancy Pelosi was out making a typically unintelligible defense of the swirling toilet bowl full of FAIL that is Obamacare:
REP. NANCY PELOSI: If you’re a senior, you know almost half of Medicaid is about long-term healthcare. Do you want grandma living in the guest room? You repeal the Affordable Care Act. If you go along– This is part of an initiative that is part of the Ryan budget, that says we’re going to voucherize Medicare, we’re going to block-grant Medicaid [to the states].
So this is a tremendous assault on the health and health security and finanial security that goes with what the Affordabl Care Act has done for the American people.
And so, ‘Make America Sick Again,’ is that what the Republicans want to do?
Full disclosure. My mother lives next door to me in a house I bought for her. My mother-in-law passed away while living in our guest room. On the whole, I think both are much better off and had a much better quality of life living with people who loved them and showered with the attention of their grandchildren than they would have had in an nursing home or “assisted living” facility that could be purchased using all that mad Obamacare cash. I know their presence and wisdom and counsel has made my life better.
Caring for your parents and grandparents in their old age is something that the government should encourage. The Commandments tell us to honor our mother and father and 1 Timothy 5 makes it very clear that honoring them definitely includes having “grandma living in the guest room.”
Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
Ask anyone with an elderly parent in a Medicaid funded nursing home if they feel better about themselves for having put an elderly parent or grandparent in one.
Not only is home care of the elderly more humane than warehousing them, if regulations were changed to allow a more robust use of Medicare and Medicaid to fund home health care, not only would quality of life be improved by costs would be drastically reduced.
More to the point, there is nothing in Obamacare that increases the affordability of long-term care in nursing homes. Obamacare’s only contact with long term care is via Medicaid expansion and that expansion did nothing to increase the number of indigent elderly using the program. No matter what Republicans do with Obamacare, many Americans will opt to have grandma in their guest room and Pelosi, as a mildly demented elderly person, herself, shouldn’t make it the object of fun. If she cared about the elderly, the budget, or our society she would be encouraging it.
