A shooting has occurred at the National Security Agency (NSA) headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland this morning.
One person in custody after an incident that took place outside the security gates to the entrance to the facility. Reuters’ initial report said that three people were shot and wounded, but this was later contradicted by NSA spokeswoman Cheryl Phillips, who said that one person was injured and taken to an area hospital.
According to NBC Washington, “a black SUV with bullet holes through its windshield appeared to have crashed into a concrete barrier at one of the facility’s secure vehicle entry gates.” NBC’s helicopter was able to get images of a man sitting handcuffed on the ground. The AP report confirmed this detail, that the SUV driver had attempted to ram the gates, but was successfully stopped and placed under arrest.
An NSA spokesman told reporters that the incident is now under control, and released a statement:
NSA police and local law enforcement are addressing an incident that took place this morning at one of NSA’s security vehicle entry gates. The situation is under control and there’s no ongoing security or safety threat.
