Yeah, normally I categorize this sort of thing as ‘cutting and running,’ but the man just fought off colon cancer. That stuff is nasty and even I have limits to my dearth of sympathy towards Democratic legislators.
Anyway… NY-22 is currently D+6, but who knows what will happen after the next redistricting? …Actually, according to Ed Koch this is a – his words, not mine – ‘godsend:’
Koch, who is leading the charge for an independent redistricting process, said he’s OK with nixing Hinchey’s seat, because “you’re not manufacturing the seat. You’re just taking advantage of the fact that you don’t have to eliminate another member who is resigning.”
“In a way it’s a godsend to the legislature not to have to fight as to who is going to be eliminated,” he said. “God eliminated him.”
Yikes, Ed. Yes, I know that New York has to lose two seats – and that one has to be upstate and the other downstate, lest there be open warfare in Albany – but surely you could have come up with a better description of the man’s colon cancer than (effectively) ‘God’s will?’ I’d avoid saying that, and I’m from the other party.
Anyway, if they do eviscerate the seat then speculating on it is futile. And every district bordering it is probably going to have significant changes to them, too.

Prayers for his health - but also
Adjoran (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 11:18PM EST (link)prayers of thanksgiving that this leftist will no longer be in the halls of power.
Yep, there's that Democratic Empathy

Even though my theology inclines me to believe it is God's will,
jakeofalltrades (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 11:39PM EST (link)I wouldn’t say it – certainly not that way, in that context! Without explaining…
Demonrats truly have no souls.
New York population is up downstate, and down upstate
lizzie Thursday, January 19th at 12:54AM EST (link)and my dividing line of upstate is somewhere just north of the Tappen Zee Bridge, just in case there is one of those New Yorkers here who is a true believer that “upstate” is north of the Cross County Parkway.
Ok, will try to stop the inside baseball that is New York redistricting.
But, elimination of NY 22 DOES greatly simplify the dilemma – both CDs had to be eliminated upstate, and the usual way the most dysfunctional legislature in America does their deal is the Dems lose one and the GOP lose one.
As much I wish Maurice Hinchey a full recovery from cancer, he has only been able to represent NY22 because of some fancy mapmaking to loop in Ithaca, and Cornell into what would be a depressed depopulated de-industrialized de-farmed gutted ho hope part of New York.
At least maybe NYS will finally get around to drawing the new maps based on the 2010 census.
I assume NYS is again the last state to do so. Mrs. Pelosi believes she can win back the House with I guess at least 5-6 wins in New York.
Time to visit legalinsurrection – great coverage on NY22 in 2010.
and see how that Fordham U contest worked out.
Of course, the real war is being fought over the State Senate redistricting. Can not wait to see what they do with Jeffrey Klein’s “dangling lobster tail” that takes three pages to print from Throgs Neck north to Eastchester.
But, to be very clear, two CDs will be lost somewhere north of the Tapan Zee Bridge, because that is where New York keeps de-populating.
<y bet is the big dilemma downstate is how to put Breezy Point into Grimm's CD, forcing Bob Turner to run against the only other GOP representative in NYC.
You have no idea what this is really about. I made these maps, in 2003-4.

freemanja1991 (Diary) Thursday, January 19th at 2:09AM EST (link)There is a way to make his district and Grimm’s safe, I was playing with that a while back and don’t know how to describe it. I just hope that Congresswoman Slaughter gets a Monroe only county district, and that Higgins gets a Buffalo Metro only district. Putting Hanna and Owens into one district could be an interesting fair fight way to carve up another district.
