The seat, of course, was vacated by Chris Lee as part of what was a somewhat bizarre Craigslist meltdown. Ms. Corwin is herself a state Assemblywoman who was first elected in 2008 after defeating the Republican candidate in the primary; she’s previously run on the Conservative ticket in NY and has been endorsed by Paladino (who won this district in 2010). Jane Corwin has been described as a strong public speaker and is expected to be able to self-fund; there is no scandal attached to her name, and no claim that she is anything but acceptably conservative. And, last point: New York does not actually permit primaries in special elections. The state party makes the choice*. I mention all of this because there seems to be a burgeoning desire to frame this in terms of the NY-23 shenanigans last year. Specifically, certain Tea Party groups (H/T: AoSHQ) are getting ready to get upset that Corwin was picked over Dave Bellavia, and would presumably be happy to see a grassroots drive to either remove Corwin, or third-party spoiler the whole thing.
I can’t sign off on that, sorry. I like Dave: I read his memoir House to House; I thought it was good; and it is obvious that we would have been better off if Bellavia had won the Republican nomination in 2008 for NY-26. But he did not in fact win the nomination, and I am unaware that he’s held public office since then. Jane Corwin is, again, a Republican who is acceptable to the Conservative party, has no scandal about her, and can afford the special election. Failing some flaw that I am not seeing, I am missing how this can be seen as not being at least a little bit about drama and/or personalities on the part of certain members of the NY Tea Party.
So. Jane Corwin for NY-26.

PS: Let me just preempt: it’s my business because state and local Tea Party groups expect me (and the rest of RedState) to support their candidates with attention and fundraising drives when said candidates win primaries. Which is fine: but we’re not tame lions.

JWR Tuesday, February 22nd at 4:36PM EST (link)Republicans should never support a candidate without a clear appreciation for the sanctity of life. Erick – or others – I’ve heard conflicting reports about Corwin’s stance on the abortion issue (and defunding Planned Parenthood) – can anyone speak to her true stance?
How's D-PAK doing?

Yes, you have to respond to that.

Plus Dave was a Theater Major! Gasp!
Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Tuesday, February 22nd at 5:01PM EST (link)I really like Dave also, but good call on Jane. This is the type of bold, supportive, common sense backing that brought me to RS.
Jane has never answered any of the political questions on abortion. But as you noted, she has a pretty good track record on 2nd Amendment Issues, against so-called same-sex marriage, school vouchers, for the death penalty, term limits, tax decreases, etc.
Frankly, based on what I know it’s hard to argue with this choice….
“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson
Tea Party angst
SKully (Diary) Tuesday, February 22nd at 6:09PM EST (link)I am one district over from NY-26, and an active member of one of the local Tea Party groups. (I am also a PC, but I know how much my input mattered – nada).
What is annoying about the Corwin pick is not her as much as the process of picking her. There were MANY good, well-known candidates who publicly expressed interest to the Republican leadership. The WNY Tea Party groups received no respect from them.
All that was asked was for some time, or a forum of all the prospective candidates. There have been radio call-in and Facebook campaigns to consider all candidates. Prominent talk shows captured the public sentiment here – that is, this seat belonged to a rich person hand-picked by the leadership, and that’s who gets it again.
Governor Cuomo has not even announced a special election yet. After he does, there will be 90 days before the election – plenty of time for campaigning. There was NO reason to rush this decision. The local R’s leadership were begged to consider everyone, but we know this decision was made within a day, if not hours of Lee’s announcement.
You should also know that there is one so-called Tea Party group locally that is pushing this 3rd party candidate theory. This is NOT the main, larger TP group. This very small group has 2 individuals that keep getting pushed by leftist media as the ‘head’ of the TP here. They will be the ones pushing for another 3rd party candidate. Do I support this? NO. Was it predicted that this is what they would do – well, YES.
I for one will be supporting Corwin. With the big advantage for the R’s in this district, she will win if running just against a Dem. However, our Republican leaders could have avoided this whole possibility of a 3rd candidate if they just gave the illusion of listening to the active Republicans.

Then Work On That
IJB Wednesday, February 23rd at 12:40AM EST (link)There’s *tons* wrong with the NY political system, including how they pick candidates for special elections – *that* should be the short-term focus of NY Tea Partiers: fixing all that…
Good to hear
victrola Tuesday, February 22nd at 6:30PM EST (link)Ms. Corwin sounds like she will have a solid, conservative voting record, and most importantly, can keep this seat out of Democrats’ hands.
I get so sick of real conservatives being smeared as RINOs because of one or two minor issues. I’m being facetious here, but I sometimes think various tea party groups are Soros-funded to torpedo conservatives that can actually win elections.
Paladino endorsed her
rdelbov Tuesday, February 22nd at 6:48PM EST (link)She has run on the conservative party label before
What else do we need?
Sounds like a TP group got its nose out of joint
Adjoran (Diary) Wednesday, February 23rd at 2:18AM EST (link)because they weren’t consulted.
I’m not sure how this particular group operated in the district, but there have been cases where grassroots conservative groups bad-mouthed the local Republicans, activists who had spent years building the Party and working to elect candidates, and then were shocked when they weren’t invited to sit at the head of the table when nominations were handed out.
Now certainly in some of these cases the problem was caused by the inclusion of the loud and obnoxious Paulbots in the movement, which reflected badly on the whole group, perhaps unfairly.
Still, the old wisdom holds true: if you want to borrow your neighbor’s lawnmower, it’s best not to run over his dog first.
Absent any specific reason to oppose Corwin, it’s just sour grapes.
