No Man Is An Island... Except Donald Trump and His Position On NATO

One of the things that Donald Trump has made an issue about when it comes to foreign policy is withdrawing from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO. It has driven the more hawkish Republicans insane and even some of the more moderate Republicans are left scratching their heads.

However, there has been a bit of a wild card in the equation – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The Republican leader has been quiet on the issue… up until yesterday.

McConnell’s comments come just days after Trump continued his criticism of the alliance, calling it “obsolete” in an interview with a German newspaper.

But McConnell said the alliance “is the most important military alliance in world history and is more important than it ever was.”

Trump criticized NATO during his presidential campaign, saying the United States would help its allies “If they fulfill their obligations to us.”

Now, I am not someone who makes it a habit of agreeing with Mitch McConnell (in fact, I’ve referred to him as a super villain in the past), but he is right in this case, and Trump is wrong.

But, more than that, this is beginning to look like the Republicans are testing their wings on certain issues and setting themselves up as a group that could bring Trump closer to the middle on certain issues. And, I have no doubt they will try. Republicans in Congress, however, are nothing if not a bit vindictive (to be fair, so are Democrats), so I don’t see them doing it often. Rubbing the Democrats’ collective nose is so much more fun, you see.

But, they will do it enough. The question becomes “On what issue will the Republicans oppose Trump?” The answer, as I am sure those of you who have paid attention to House and Senate Republicans for more than an hour can guess, is “Not nearly enough.” They’ll fight the absolutely ridiculous, like abandoning NATO, and they’ll also fight any sort of reform Donald Trump accidentally proposes.

NATO is definitely in need of a restructuring, as well as perhaps a summit to address their purpose and if that purpose needs to be altered somewhat, but they are still a great alliance and deserve U.S. support. Trump is slowly becoming the only one (in government) who believes it is obsolete.

That means he is likely not going to get his wish on this one. Which is a good thing. Mitch McConnell (I am twitching as I write this next part) is correct.
