Betsy DeVos is Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of Education, and I need not fawn over her nomination any more than I already have. However, the Left is certainly not as enthusiastic as I am, and they are doing everything they can to torpedo her nomination. The Media has taken up the cause as well, and they are attacking DeVos as a religious extremist.

No, I am not making this up.

First, we need to check out the feelings expressed by the group Americans United for Separation of Church and State in order to get the reasoning for attacking her faith.

The appointment of Betsy DeVos to oversee the U.S. Department of Education is an insult to public education. DeVos is a divisive figure who has spent much of her career working to privatize public education. She has fought to divert resources away from public schools into private, mostly religious institutions. She is the leader of the crusade to create school vouchers across the country.

Ninety percent of American children rely on public schools for an education. The country deserves an Education Secretary who will advocate for those children and their families and represent their interests. Instead, we have an ideologue who favors privatizing education.

Private school vouchers violate the fundamental principle of religious freedom because they fund religious education with taxpayer dollars. This is indeed a dark day for public education in America.

Now for how the Media has, and will continue, to put this into pieces about her. Here’s an op-ed from The New York Times, for example.

Betsy DeVos stands at the intersection of two family fortunes that helped to build the Christian right. In 1983, her father, Edgar Prince, who made his money in the auto parts business, contributed to the creation of the Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center identifies as extremist because of its anti-L.G.B.T. language.

And The New Yorker jumped in.

In a 2013 interview with Philanthropy Magazine, DeVos expressed her ultimate goals in education reform, which she said she saw encompassing not just charter schools and voucher programs but also homeschooling and virtual education: “That all parents, regardless of their zip code, have had the opportunity to choose the best educational setting for their children. And that all students have had the best opportunity to fulfill their God-given potential.”

What’s happening here is that they see someone who is not afraid to divert money away from broken, failing schools that won’t improve and instead give it to parents to let them choose where to send their children. It empowers families to take control of their children’s education. Many of these parents end up using that money to send their kids to private, Christian-oriented schools, which is what really drives them insane.

The fact is that DeVos is a good person, with religious conviction. That does not eliminate someone’s eligibility to be the Secretary of Education. They want you to think that she is going to try to force traditional sexuality and family values on the students and make sure every child in America knows that being gay is a sin and those sinners will burn in Hell.

But, DeVos has said no such thing. All she has advocated for is the power of parents to choose their children’s education. That takes power – and, more importantly, money – away from the government, and they will do whatever they can to stop that.
