George Zimmerman, who one instant was a model for self-defense gun ownership and use and the next was slowly losing his mind thanks to an addiction to the fifteen minutes of fame, is back at it, this time trying to piss off even more people: he’s auctioning off the gun that gun Trayvon Martin.
WOFL FOX 35 says that it was told by the former neighborhood-watch volunteer that the Department of Justice recently returned the weapon. “I’m a free American,” he said, “I can do what I want with my possessions.”
Somebody signed “George M. Zimmerman” has listed the Kel-Tec PF-9 9-mm on a firearms-auction website. The seller describes the gun as “an American Firearm Icon” and says it was used against Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, 2012, the night of the violent attack that sparked a national debate about violence and race. Zimmerman said he acted in self-defense and was eventually acquitted of manslaughter and murder charges.
This… is really stupid. There was a time when Zimmerman could be seen as someone who is respectable and had to use a gun in a bad situation, for which he was put through a major and highly publicized trial. His life was turned upside down and he had to learn to cope with that.
Except, he didn’t. He loved the media attention, and he kept striving for more, and letting his life spiral out of control afterward. It’s not completely his fault – the media did its best to make him a social pariah for the rest of his life. However, he didn’t a good job of holding his head high and staying above it all.
But, don’t worry. The money from the auction is going to a good cause:
The auction statement promises a portion of the sale will be used to fight “BLM violence against Law Enforcement officers,” in a presumable reference to the Black Lives Matter movement, and also to combat Hillary Clinton’s “anti-firearm rhetoric.”
So… good job, I guess?
UPDATE: Maybe not?
#GeorgeZimmerman gun appears to have been removed from @GunBroker auction website. Awaiting comment. #news6 https://t.co/XEZkGSO6va
