Report: More Studies Show That SCOTUS Overturning Roe v. Wade Is Saving Lives

The Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade has produced some encouraging results when it comes to saving the lives of unborn children. Recent studies show that since the court’s decision in 2021, thousands of children have been born that might not have been under previous policy.

This data suggests that the overturning of Roe has already made a major impact.

LifeNews just published a report discussing a study conducted by the Society of Family Planning that supposedly showed that abortion rates have remained relatively the same since before the ruling on Dobbs. However, the media outlet suggested there are some deep flaws in the study, and cited four other studies showing that there has been a significant decline in abortions since the decision. Missing in the media coverage of these new #WeCount estimates is that since late 2022 four studies analyzing birth data have provided strong statistical evidence that recently enacted pro-life laws have saved lives. My Lozier Institute study (November 2022), a Journal of the American Medical Association study (June 2023), and a University of Houston study (January 2024) all show that the Texas Heartbeat Act resulted in approximately 1,000 more children being born in Texas every month. Also, a study from November 2023 by the Institute for Labor Economics showed similar findings. Analyzing birth data from the first six months of 2023, the study found significantly higher birth rates in 13 states enforcing strong pro-life laws than in 25 states where abortion remained legal.

Now that states are able to determine their own abortion policies, abortions are decreasing. It’s a positive sign, but it is also worth mentioning that the issue of life is more cultural than governmental. The state certainly plays a role in protecting the rights of unborn children. But the pro-life movement must continue to work on changing hearts and minds about abortion.

Moreover, this is also an opportunity for crisis pregnancy centers to step up and help mothers with unexpected pregnancies. These organizations have been instrumental in persuading these women not to terminate their pregnancies. This is the reason why progressives have ramped up their attacks against crisis pregnancy centers over recent years, pushing legislation intended to limit their operations.

The pro-abortion lost a critical battle when the Supreme Court ruled against Roe, but they are still quite dominant when it comes to the persuasion game. However, legal victories are still important – not only do they provide critical protections for babies, they also inspire the pro-life crowd to continue the fight.

This development is much needed given that Democrats in blue states have also passed more legislation protecting abortion. Now, some of those living in red states are traveling to abortion-friendly ones to receive the procedure.

The United States has been standing at a crossroads since Roe was overturned. The impact of pro-life laws might offer a glimpse into a future in which the rights of the unborn are recognized and protected. However, the road to such a future will be fraught with debate and societal divisions. Future studies and legal battles will have a significant effect on shaping the future of the nation and its children.
