New Jersey's government has begun emulating California's in its approach to using the school system to influence kids to embrace progressive transgender ideology. State officials are pressuring school districts to help students "transition" to the opposite sex without the knowledge and consent of their parents.
This development is part of an overall push to use the state to implement a progressive agenda in K-12 schools.
Earlier in 2023, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy declared the state a "safe haven" for "gender-affirming care" for minors. Now, state officials are becoming more aggressive in compelling school districts to subvert parental rights. The New York Post's editorial board published an op-ed explaining the situation:
State Attorney General Matthew Platkin actually went to court Tuesday to stop three districts — in Middletown, Marlboro and Manalapan-Englishtown — from requiring schools to notify Mom and Dad if their kids want to switch genders.
Platkin got an injunction against such policies back in June; the judge in Tuesday’s hearing will decide any day whether the three districts can go ahead anyway until the larger case is decided.
Under New Jersey law, kids can claim to be any sex they choose — and schools must accommodate them, letting them use any corresponding bathroom, locker room, etc.
Even without parental consent.
Naturally, parents are not supportive of the idea. One individual said she believes "teachers choosing to withhold this type of information about my child is morally wrong," and that she would not "ever co-parent with the government."
Marc Zitomer, an attorney representing the Marlboro school board, argued:
Keeping parents in the dark about important issues involving their children is counterintuitive and contrary to well-established Supreme Court case law that says that parents have a constitutional right to direct and control the upbringing of their children.
As I mentioned, California has also taken action to force school districts to trans children without parental consent:
The Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) continues to find itself at the center of controversy due to its new policy requiring educators to inform parents if their children indicate that they wish to “transition” to the opposite sex. The policy flies in the face of progressives in the Golden State and elsewhere who insist that parents do not have the right to be notified if their children exhibit symptoms of gender dysphoria.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has issued threat after threat to cow the district into falling in line with progressive gender ideology. Now, the state’s attorney general is also set to take action.
The state's attorney general announced on August 4 plans to launch a civil rights investigation into the Chino Valley Unified School District related to its gender policy.
These policies are being employed by school districts all across the country. Some are being forced to implement them, while others are willingly doing so. The measures have sparked national debate on the role of schools in involving themselves in these matters.
The core issue is the clear violation of a parent's right to raise their kids as they see fit. People should be allowed to make decisions about their child's mental health without the government trying to force its own solutions on them. This is especially true when it comes to children suffering from gender dysphoria.
The "gender-affirming care" model that progressives have been foisting on the rest of the nation has already done great damage to the mental health of children who were pushed to take puberty blockers and even undergo irreversible surgical procedures all in the name of inclusivity.
By insisting on these policies, progressives are getting closer to realizing their vision of the state usurping the role of parents. Indeed, this endeavor is not limited only to schools. In California and other states, the government can send men with guns and badges to forcibly remove children from their homes if parents choose not to embrace progressive ideology when it comes to their children.
This development further illustrates that the hard left is no longer satisfied with trying to convince the nation that transing children is a good idea. Now, they are resorting to using the state to force their ideas on everyone else. This will continue as long as decent people allow it.
