President Trump on Tuesday called for Attorney General William Barr to launch an investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The president demanded that the findings of the potential probe be revealed before Election Day.

In an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Trump argued that the story about Hunter’s business dealings in Ukraine involved “major corruption” and that the Department of Justice should look into it right away. “We have got to get the attorney general to act. He’s got to act and he’s got to act fast,” Trump insisted, referencing the bombshell New York Post story detailing Hunter’s ties to Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company. He urged the attorney general  to “appoint somebody” to investigate.

“This is major corruption and this has to be known about before the election,” he added.

The president’s remarks came after House Republicans called on Barr to appoint a special prosecutor to look into the allegations against Hunter Biden. The FBI is currently examining the information on Hunter’s hard drive.

The Trump campaign has frequently highlighted the Post’s report, which alleged that the younger Biden set up a meeting between his father and a top adviser at Burisma to deal with allegations of corruption against the company. The former vice president called the story a “smear” and his campaign pointed out that his official schedule did not list a meeting. They conceded that it is possible that the executive may have approached Biden during a different event involving Ukraine at the time.

Democrats and members of the corporate media have claimed that the story is part of a Russian disinformation scheme. But National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe shot this theory down, stating that there was no evidence of Kremlin involvement.

Prior to a campaign rally, Trump had called for an FBI investigation into Hunter Biden after being asked if a probe should be launched. He told reporters, “Certainly, the FBI should be investigating it because, on its face, he’s guilty as can be.”

So far, it is unknown whether or not an actual meeting between Joe Biden and the Burisma executive took place, and the FBI is already investigating the Post’s story to discern whether or not it is a disinformation campaign. However, it seems clear that Hunter Biden’s stint as a board member of the company is suspect, given the fact that he was given an exorbitant salary despite having no experience in the energy industry. The emails indicate that the firm wanted the younger Biden to use his father’s influence to aid against its legal troubles.

However, at this point, it does not seem likely that any information will emerge that will further damage the former vice president in a meaningful way. The majority of voters have already made up their minds as to who they will support and many have already voted early. After the election, regardless of who wins, this story will likely fall by the wayside.
