With Donald Trump securing the necessary delegates to clinch the Republican nomination, officials with Ted Cruz’s campaign are pushing for a delegate coup at the convention in Cleveland.
Officials from Ted Cruz’s defunct presidential campaign are talking up the possibility of a coup at next month’s Republican convention in Cleveland.
Bob Vander Plaats, a former national co-chair of Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign, told NBC that “everything’s got to be on the table” when it comes to exempting delegates from supporting Donald Trump at the convention.
On Tuesday, Cruz’s New Jersey state director Steve Lonegan called for a “delegate revolt.”
“I would love to see a revolt,” he told CNN. “It’s time for the Republican Party to get some backbone and stand up against this guy.”
Steve Deace on his radio show said:
“You can end this and it’s on you to do so. The rules permit you to do so,” Deace said addressing the delegates via his radio show. “You have a choice to make: You can suffer the wrath of Trump’s cult now, or you can suffer the wrath of the American voter later.”
Normally, this kind of thing would be unthinkable. But with Donald Trump flailing the way he is currently and no end in sight, this could become a possibility. Sooner or later, Bernie Sanders will concede to Hillary Clinton. At that point, most Sanders voters will align with Hillary and then polls might show Trump down the 8-10 points in polls where he was prior to clinching the GOP nomination.
Still, it is a very long shot. The rules do allow for it but GOP attorney Ben Ginsberg said recently on ‘Morning Joe’, “It’s not going to happen.” The likelihood is very slim.
But with Trump, one never knows what will happen.
