My Goodness

I can’t say that I am surprised by the level of aggravation and acrimony in the comments of my “Letting the Chips Fall” post. I certainly promised more than I delivered. You should have seen the first six drafts. They were much better.

For the few cheery souls remaining, I appreciate that you got the point — it’s exactly what Will Folks has been doing, but doing in a ridiculous third person narrative. The emails and phone calls from people in the media wanting to know when exactly I was going to do the big reveal on this were more than a little illuminating.

To the rest of you, I apologize for clearly rubbing you the wrong way on this one. I thought it was necessary to make a few points.

First, getting some additional facts out into this conversation that no one else either had or was putting forward including that Will Folks has been trying to push this out for a year and that the Haley team knew about it. Also, that the Bauer camp had been using it for a while to try to keep people from supporting Nikki. Given all the connections there, I do think the Bauer campaign coordinated this.

Second, and most importantly, I think it is necessary to push this conversation beyond what did and did not happen to who, if anybody, is getting Will Folks to try to ruin Nikki Haley. And the intended audience of the post has gotten the hint. I think we’ll be seeing some enterprising journalists start asking questions along those lines.

So, as we head into the weekend, my apologies for building up your expectations, but not my regrets. It’s necessary to start pushing this story in the direction it needs to go, which is motivation and other interested parties.

Feel free to use this as a thread to beat me up as best you like. Maybe you’ll find it cathartic. As for me, I’m going to go see Robin Hood and maybe Iron Man 2 too.

conservativecrusade (Diary) Friday, May 28th at 6:44PM EST (link)

and you are wrong! The parody by Eric may not have been the thing to do as it keeps this crap in the spotlight and should have been thought out more, but in no way does it destroy the credibility of Eric or this site.

I will agree with anyone that says the whole thing was in poor taste, 2 wrongs do not make a right, and that it did not solve a thing or push the spotlight off of anyone, but what you have said, sir, is absurd and ignorant.

And I say this being one who is more than willing to say what I want to, argue when I feel I am right even if it pisses everyone off, and am more than ready, and have done so in past, ignore the hissy fit of a mod. But at the end of the day, this site is still one of the very best out there, Eric and his team bring a ton of valuable info to us all, and I will still trust what they type tomorrow.

Your ignorant rant is not only obnoxious, but it is ban worthy. And I will never agree with bans over strongly different opinions or refusal to obey the mods without question or debate. But you are an idiot and your post was a personal attack. You did not take into consideration that Erik is friends with Nikki and SHOULD take offense at her name being smeared and her family embarrassed and that he SHOULD stand in her defense since no proof to date was given. And you def did not consider that while the way he came back at the story could be argued to be pointless and out of line, that overall he is consistent with his message, endorsements, and convictions.

I agree to disagree with the way it was handled here in certain posts and responses, but you went on a personal and ignorant attack and I hope when I come back to the site later, you are no longer with us!~

It bothers me when

jdp Friday, May 28th at 7:05PM EST (link)

a blogger feels the need to “push” a story in a certain “direction” that favors his chosen candidate. I honestly (and naively) thought RedState was above that sort of shenanigans. I haven’t posted many comments, but I’ve been reading here for several years and signed up (or tried to) a couple years ago. I thought Eric and RedState were about putting forward truth, not pushing stories with fibs or “anything goes if it advances ‘the cause’”! I’ll keep coming and reading and, occasionally, commenting, but I’ve lost respect for RedState and I damn sure won’t trust anything I read here without confirming it elsewhere. At this point, I’m almost convinced that Eric doesn’t care whether the story is true or not, he just wants to kill it – and the guy who’s alleging it – in order to help one of his favorite politicians. Call me crazy, but that bothers me, too.

1. If “political activism” has come to mean knowingly telling lies in order to get your way, then count me out. And I see no other honest explanation for what Eric did.

2. If this site is about “political activism” at the expense of truth then, as I said before, I’ll still read and occasionally comment but I won’t trust anything I read here unless confirmed elsewhere. Who in their right mind would?

and two points from me

streiff (Diary) Friday, May 28th at 7:52PM EST (link)

1. you need to explain the “knowingly telling lies” part in more detail

2. It’s a free country.

“What keeps me here is the reek of beer, the ladies and the craic”

and two points from me

jdp Friday, May 28th at 8:39PM EST (link)

Again, I’m not an idiot.

“We know who paid Will Folks to push this story out there.”

“So who pushed Folks out? Was there money paid? Sources tell Erick Erickson that yes, despite Folks’s denial, money was paid to procure the story and guarantee it hit at the most opportune time — right before the primary.”

“Who did it? . . . . You will have to tune in for the identity of the campaign trying to destroy Nikki Haley later today.”

And then:

“I have no clue if anyone is behind Will Folks doing this.”

I think Eric’s defenders are the ones who need to “explain in more detail” why he wasn’t lying.

Again:

“We know who paid Will Folks to push this story out there.”

vs:

“I have no clue if anyone is behind Will Folks doing this.”

Both of those statements cannot be true. IMO, the honest Eric defenders are at least admitting the lie but trying to defend it. Denying the lie won’t work, though. It’s right there in black and white.

I agree with this sentiment

aesthete (Diary) Saturday, May 29th at 5:00PM EST (link)

Many other sites (The New Ledger, Fox News, and others) reported this news straight, and not as satire or a lie. At the very least, Erick was obligated to tell these sources that he was being satirical in his postings.

I come to RedState because it’s a place with reasonably civil discourse where I can positively impact the country, and where I know that people are playing it straight, i.e., I would be surprised to find out that mbeck were a lesbian stripper working nights in Vegas, instead of a retired curmudgeon in Phoenix :) If Erick wants to play games with his readership, prove a point, run a social experiment, or bluff Folks or someone else into telling the truth, I would prefer that he do so in his personal blog. I’m not going to stop reading RS or Erick’s posts, but I’m certainly going to take them with a grain of salt. It’s a shame that Erick lowered his credibility for a tabloid story.

OK – who?

Pardon me for being naive and gullible. I thought this was a true statement. I usually take people at their word. You know, like this:

“Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”

And it didn’t come with a ‘/sarc’ tag either. So how were we to know it was a joke unless we were in on it beforehand?

Actually, the money trail is looking clearer

civil truth (Diary) Friday, May 28th at 7:46PM EST (link)

…but the proof (rather than just strong suspicion) apparently remains elusive.

But absence of proof didn’t stop the media from disseminating Folks’ accusation. And that willingness to rush to spread toxie material bodes ill for anybody to trust anything that is publicly disseminated – and that in turn is ultimately incompatible with deliberative representative government.

I certainly hoped that Erick could have laid matters to rest, but in today’s world where increasing numbers proclaim the right of entitlement to their own facts, such opportunities are rare.

Everything erick pointed to is credible evidence of his belief that Folks had people pushing the story out. In fact, his evidence is far more compelling then anything Folks has produced.

Yet, in Folks situation, the grand claims backed by little evidence causes people to doubt Haley, not Folks.

Erick makes grand claims and backs with less than what he claimed but more than what Folks provided, and what happened? Bauer is left alone and erick is doubted.

Double standard? You bet.

Handily illustrated? Damn straight.

Don’t forget people that Erick is on CNN now. This is exactly the kind of stuff he can bust out on a panel to force “journalists” to confront their double standards.

Where did the Haley family play into this "strategery"? Yes, there's a family involved in this GAME.

Redhead_Infidel (Diary) Friday, May 28th at 8:31PM EST (link)

And at the core of all this clever “strategery” and game playing are people’s very real lives. The Haley family, specifically.

I was one of the “naive” who was hopeful that Erick really had the answers, and that this family was going to be saved by an intrepid blogger with the connections to get at the truth. So I believed his first post; but when he started to drag it out like it was a game, instead of helping the Haleys, I knew he was not in it for them. In fact, I wonder if they even crossed his mind at all, considering his target was the media.

As disappointed as I am that this was all a game, I’m even more disappointed with the High Priests of the The RS In Crowd telling all the rest of us how stupid we are and to drop dead. I hate when conservatives turn on each other like that, and especially when voicing an opinion over what Erick himself admits to be a highly controversial move. Tip: controversy breeds disagreement.

I’m sure Erick wasn’t expecting free-thinking, independent conservatives to fall in line with his gambit, and to expect such is idiotic and anathema to what conservatism is all about. We are adults, we think for ourselves, and we have strong opinions. Why don’t all the High Priests of The RS In Crowd man up and quit tinkling in their panties about some honest principled dissent?! Why can’t you handle disagreement like big boys, for pete’s sake? Quit threatening the ban-hammer like tiny despots and quit demanding that people leave because they don’t line up with YOU!!

This whole episode is ugly and we need to leave it behind. Erick is oh-so-very human and humans make mistakes. He made one here, and he’s a big boy who can take his lumps without a cadre of frothing group-think supporters beating down honest disagreement.

You have inserted yourself into this story in a way that cannot turn out positively for anyone. Any point you were trying to make was undercut by the fact that you told the nation a bold-faced lie, your nobler intentions notwithstanding. You have a large audience sir, and conservatives and conservatism are judged in part by prominent voices in the blogosphere.

With the status that you have earned among conservatives comes a certain responsibility. You are not obligated to wield it, but you are accountable to it nonetheless.

But…..you really didn’t. You were playing a game. It doesn’t matter what your intentions were. You were playing a game.

You shouldn’t have.

A lot of damage has been done, imho, to RedState’s credibility. I believe in what this site stands for. Saying one thing and not following through on it, and then saying, “oh, well, we didn’t really mean it”, is not what we are supposed to be about.

We are not better off today than we were yesterday.

One thing I know: Will Folks has a new lease on life, and credibility. Please try not to pretend otherwise. Nikki Haley is not better off today, that’s for sure.

By playing the same game as he was, he was mocking him and the fools that followed and believed the guy making the slander.
It was so easy.

They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.
If they need more voters,
then they have to make more of who they are for.

We are there in the various Tea Party groups, leaderless, but not rudderless.

A new poll shows that Nikki Haley has actally extended her lead by about a point since Folk’s made his claim. Either the voters in South Carolina aren’t buying Folks lies or they don’t care. My money is on the former.

…although Erick’s detractors would say, “Yeah, but she would have increased her lead 4 points without Erick attempt to stop the smear.” Then again, without Erick’s tireless efforts (to take nothing away from Nikki herself, and her family, volunteers and supporters), it’s also possible Nikki would have been down 5 points this weekend.

I read all the posts and I don't really understand

dajeeps (Diary) Saturday, May 29th at 1:41AM EST (link)

First, I read one a couple of weeks ago about the Palin endorsement, and the take away on it was that Haley the RINO (paraphrasing, of course) is snaring Palin and Palin doesn’t know what she’s getting into.

I have to admit it’s been several days since I looked at RS, mostly just monitoring from Facebook, and here’s this bruhaha but the posts seem to be a little incoherent on message while taking the Palin endorsement post at full value. Perhaps it’s because I’m up here in NY and what appears like a 180 just isn’t clicking wth me.

I think I would understand this better if it was a straight forward admission that new information has come to light and because of that, the other guy appears to be worse and maybe Palin knew more than anyone guessed. When making a choice you can only go with what you know and if things change, then adjust. But it’s always better to do it in a forward way rather than becoming one of the props. It’s far more credible.

I'm sorry: are you on the right site?

Moe Lane (Diary) Saturday, May 29th at 8:45AM EST (link)

Because when it comes to RS, this (to quote a physicist friend of mine):

“First, I read one a couple of weeks ago about the Palin endorsement, and the take away on it was that Haley the RINO (paraphrasing, of course) is snaring Palin and Palin doesn’t know what she’s getting into.”

…isn’t even wrong.

Naturally the people who didn't get it are upset

Adjoran (Diary) Saturday, May 29th at 2:14AM EST (link)

But the point was made, in spades. It’s the WWWFD? bumper sticker, duh . . . don’t get all, er, sophomoric over it.

Folks has already run his course, I think. The Post & Courier ran with Haley’s appearance in Charleston, which centered on the allegations, but she handled the questions well and there was nothing new from Folks. The story is their 3rd lead on the website, no related picture on the home page for the first time in a few days.

The State (Columbia) has nothing about it on their front page – you have to scroll all the way down to see Haley mentioned in a headline, and that’s about how she and congressional candidate Tim Scott would ‘break boundaries’ if elected – not a word on Folks.

Now he has run into the Mariana Trench for scandalous news: a three-day holiday weekend (note the White House’s Sestak “statement/cover-up” hit today, too). Anything he releases now will be overlooked, but next week people will already be wondering why he doesn’t just go away.

still............

ladyhawke53 Saturday, May 29th at 8:46AM EST (link)

I am still concerned (not upset) that this joke/play on Folks style even happened. When I first saw the story, I was happy that this crud Folks was getting his comeuppance, an aha – at last the truth will come out. That finally rumor, innuendo, or an outright lie would be put to rest and the ugliness exposed. Then when I realized that it was satire, I was disappointed. Disappointed that someone I respected would stoop to the childish level that Folks did.

I will still read RS and still respect the articles – but I can be disappointed in an attempt that for me fell flat. I am puzzled by the comments against those who didn’t find this “joke” funny – we’re being labeled with some pretty disrespectful comments, to which I can only say “wow – really?” Way to be tolerant of those who don’t appreciate being mislead.

An observation

RedBeard Saturday, May 29th at 8:45AM EST (link)

Seems to me that there are a few folks posting here who are struggling with their own fragile psyches, resulting in some rather hysterical outbursts.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Erick, there doesn’t seem to be any good reason for the sturm und drang being presented here. Stating a case, or a dissenting opinion, doesn’t necessarily involve the use of “Oh, yeah? Well, you’re ugly and your mother dresses you funny!”

Scut Farkas is not a role model.

None of the above applies to emotional outbursts against liberals, leftists, Marxists, statists, congressional dunderheads, and American Idol; in those cases, carry on.

kyle8 (Diary) Saturday, May 29th at 5:23PM EST (link)

even though it was not as original as many people thought, (it was based on a 1960′s show called The New People). But by mid way through the second season I stopped watching it. It was easy to see by then that the writers had no Idea where they were going and it was just one big endless tease like the X-Files were.

Like the old joke, how far can you lead a Jackass without a rope.

Still it goes to show that you can go pretty far without any sort of storyline as long as you have compelling characters and good character development.

aesthete (Diary) Saturday, May 29th at 5:44PM EST (link)

I kept watching, but I pretty much knew that the mysteries were unsolvable and that I was watching for the characters. Even so, the finale was very… sitcom-ish. I almost expected the final scene to be Kate turning of the lights in a bar someplace.

Disagree with both of you.

Diogenes314 (Diary) Saturday, May 29th at 6:51PM EST (link)

On pretty much all of the above. The New People was basically a counter-culture Lord of the Flies rip-off, I haven’t seen anything to suggest that it had any influence on Abrams. It was obvious that the writers knew where they were going, you just had to actually follow along to get there. No sort of storyline? Try multiple overall story-lines with subplots in each episode. And the finale was pretty satisfactory for those of us who could actually follow something more complex then Grey’s Anatomy.

You fell for it.

kyle8 (Diary) Monday, May 31st at 10:20AM EST (link)

I found that I did not want ot waste more time on those characters.

BTW It most certainly was a rip off of The New People, come on the parallels were enormous.

Either that or you just didn’t get. That’s okay. One of us had plenty of company.

As far as it being a ripoff of TNP…

You kind of have a point. They were both stranded on deserted islands. Kind of like Lord of the Rings being a ‘confusing’ version of Snow White and the seven dwarfs. What with all the short people.

In fact you should toss up another siren for more drivel/important info to come. Odd you should catch more heat than the one who preciptiated it all…

Well nuff said about that, it’s good to see all my old friends, Art, AE and al the rest still keeping the faith.
