If Michael McDonald, the chairman of the Nevada Republican Party, doesn’t have the decency to resign and apologize for his comments during Trump’s rally in Las Vegas Saturday, he should be removed.
CNN reports that during his introductory remarks, McDonald “argued” that polling locations stayed open late to accommodate long lines of voters “so a certain group could vote.” McDonald was referring to a polling location in Clark County, which is 30% Hispanic and the county in which Las Vegas is located:
Last night, in Clark County, they kept a poll open ’til 10 o’clock at night so a certain group could vote. The polls are supposed to close at seven. This was kept open until ten. Yeah, you feel free right now? You think this is a free and easy election? That’s why it’s important.
That’s unacceptable. McDonald should quit or be fired. I hate to raise the racism thing, but McDonald’s sure sound racist to me. You can determine that for yourself by watching the following video clip:
According to CNN, a spokesperson for the county, said no early no early voting stations extended their closing times. They did, however, process voters who were in line at closing time.
Of course they should let the people vote who were in line at closing time. That’s a common practice at polling locations around the country.
Trump, of course, didn’t help when he took the stage and suggested that the polling location’s extended closing time to allow voters to cast their ballots is a sign of a “rigged system” pitted against his campaign:
It’s being reported that certain key Democratic polling locations in Clark County were kept open for hours and hours beyond closing time to bus and bring democratic voters in. Folks, it’s a rigged system. It’s a rigged system and we’re going to beat it. We’re going to beat it.
I do not like early voting. And I do not like the fact the officials fail to provide enough polling stations so voters wind up waiting hours to vote even less. People should not have to wait hours to vote and shame on party officials, like McDonald who do not fix this problem.
We don’t need “leaders” that disrespect voters by referring to Hispanic voters as McDonald did. Nor do we need officials that don’t even try to fix a system that causes voters to wait hours to cast their vote.
Shame on McDonald. Get rid of him now, before he does any more damage to the Republican brand.
