Rumors zoomed around the internet like a bird trapped in a house when it was speculated that Speaker Paul Ryan would be leaving the political world and stepping down after the 2018 midterm elections.

However, days later, Ryan is reassuring everyone that he has no intention of leaving his post, and will remain a congressman according to the Associated Press.

According to one Republican, Ryan said he’s too busy winning to leave office now:

In a closed-door meeting with rank-and-file members on Tuesday, Ryan indicated that it made no sense to leave “when we’re winning and have the momentum.”

That’s according to Rep. Barry Loudermilk of Georgia. Republicans responded with applause and a standing ovation.

The Wisconsin lawmaker has been trying for years to overhaul the nation’s tax code and the GOP is on the cusp of revamping the system after nearly 30 days.

Realizing that long-sought goal has stirred speculation that Ryan would step down next year after prevailing on the tax issue. He reluctantly assumed the top job in the House after Speaker John Boehner resigned in 2015.

This is good news for the GOP. Ryan is currently on the verge of succeeding in passing the Republican tax bill, and the momentum of its passage may help him lead Republicans to victory during the midterm elections.

That said, Ryan’s decision regarding his continued political life could change once all of his victories (or losses) have been pocketed. Any indication that Ryan will leave may have a negative effect on upcoming GOP interests.
