This memorial day, rapper Snoop Dog reached out via an Instagram video with a little bit of a rant about the current state of black media.
Snoop, seeing Roots being played during a day that should be all about our fallen troops, was agitated that the only time they want to talk about blacks in art is to talk about how badly they were treated during one time or another.
“Sick of this sh-t. How the f-ck they gonna put Roots on on Memorial Day?” said Snoop. “They just gonna keep beating that sh-t into our heads how they did us, huh?”
“I mean I don’t understand, America.” he continued. “They just want to keep showing the abuse we took 100’s and 100’s of years ago. But guess what? We still taking the same abuse. Think about that part. When y’all gonna make a mother f–king series about the success that black folks is having? The only success we have is Roots and 12 Years a Slave, and sh-t like that, huh?”
Snoop has a solution. Don’t support it.
“F-ck y’all I ain’t watching that sh-t, and I advise you mother f–kers as real n–gas like myself, f-ck them television shows. Let’s create our own sh-t based on today. How we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what’s real. F-ck that old shit.
You can watch his message below. As you’ve already guessed, there’s a language warning.
I love this message. Black people are more than just a tragedy that happened 100’s of years ago, and it’d be pretty cool to see more stories about their successes, and how they’ve risen from the abuse of the past.
