Once again, it’s proven that the vast majority of people who care about the cultural appropriation of minorities are busybodies with nothing better to do, but be mad about stuff.
In a recent poll by WaPo, Native Americans revealed that they don’t really care about the NFL team name for the Washington Redskins. And not just by a small margin, but the majority.
9 in 10 in fact.
“The survey of 504 people across every state and the District reveals that the minds of Native Americans have remained unchanged since a 2004 poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center found the exact same result. Responses to The Post’s questions about the issue were broadly consistent regardless of age, income, education, political party or proximity to reservations.”
The Redskin’s name has been the non-troversy that just won’t quit, generating outrage from people who think they’re speaking on behalf of people they have no right to speak for. Everyone from slacktivists to the President himself has talked about how outrageous it is that we would use something as offensive as “Redskins.”
And yet, the Native American population couldn’t care less. In fact, according to the poll, they don’t even care if someone called them a “Redskin” to their face.
There were, of course, different schools of thought. In a joint statement by two “key leaders,” fears that the name would cause harm to children came up…for some reason.
“Social science research and first-hand experience has told us that this kind of denigration has both visible and unseen consequences for Native Americans in this country,” their statement said. “This is especially the case for children, who were not polled and who are in a particularly vulnerable position to be bullied by the NFL. It is the 21st century — it is long overdue for Native Americans to be treated not as mascots or targets of slurs, but instead as equals.”
I don’t know many – including the Native American population apparently – people who think “Redskins” is a slur. I certainly never did, and it seems to be that in order for it to be a slur, once has to intend it to be one. I can think of a few words that shift from being offensive to non-offensive at the drop of a hat.
I also don’t know how the NFL is bullying children by having a name that only the permanently offended find offensive. When you’re a part of the outrage culture, you find it where you can. Even if the well has run dry and you’re scraping the bottom. This is a case of offense being taken when it wasn’t even given. Stolen outrage, as it were.
In any case, let’s let this poll put this non-troversy to bed. It’s a football team, not a statement of hate. We Texans aren’t offended by Houston’s team name, nor Dallas’s, which made a team name out of our culture. The Vikings aren’t making any Scandinavians angry, and lo! The natives don’t care that the a team has a name representing them.
It’s almost like we all just want to enjoy football, tribes included.
