We Don’t Count So Good. (Democratic National Convention via AP)

Since the beginning of this COVID-19 story that has gripped the land, I have been detailing the numbers for my home state of Michigan. Most weeks I do a post on these daily numbers at least 2 times during the week to chronicle how the curve is behaving. Below is the outline that I use for every post which just reports the numbers the state has published in an easier to read format. Here are all of my past posts which you can view HERE

Over the past 3 months, I have noticed that the state has to come back and revise deaths at least 5 times a month. This is almost always a revision upward. Today’s example has the state saying 15 deaths are attributed to Saturday, September 19th but it actually was only 3. The 12 additional deaths are added from ‘previous” deaths that were not counted but are now added.

With the recent revelation that Michigans’ top medical officer said a 2-month-old infant died from COVID but it was later revealed the child did not, Michigan’s Top Doc Announces a 2-Month-Old Infant Boy Died From COVID, Except He Didn’t. I’m wondering what is actually going on.

Do other states keep numbers as sloppy as Michigan? Let me know in the comments below or at [email protected].

Welcome to week TWENTY-NINE of posting numbers for COVID-19 here in the State of Michigan as released by the Official Michigan Government website. These are the numbers released earlier this afternoon by the State of Michigan.

The total number of confirmed cases: 115,870 which is a 483 person increase from the previous day. Deaths: 6,653 total deceased which is a *15 person increase from the previous day.

Note on deaths (09/19/20): Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff three times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS). If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website. As a result of the most recent assessment, today’s data includes 12 additional deaths identified by this methodology.

**At the suggestion of a reader of these posts, I will also be combining Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County totals being that is the bulk of Metro Detroit.**

*Combined tri-county area ( including Detroit) number of cases confirmed 61,247 which accounts for 52.8% of the cases in the state.

*Combined tri-county area ( including Detroit) number of deaths confirmed 4,895 which accounts for 73.5% of the deaths in the state.

*Detroit and Wayne County lead the state with 31,823 cases or 27.4% of the total in the state.

*Detroit and Wayne County account for 2,784 of the deaths in the state which are 41.9% of the current total in the state.

The city of Detroit is in the County of Wayne so that is why they are combined here.
