Marble Halls & Silver Screens With Sarah Lee Ep. 42: The 'Minneapolis Burning, Twitter Feuding, and Outer Banks Dreaming' Edition

Minneapolis is suffering and, while tragic, perhaps it’s going to lead to something good. The death of George Floyd — clearly murder based on the video, and the officer involved has now been charged accordingly — has sparked upheaval in a Minneapolis neighborhood that is terribly sad but has also done something so many other officer-involved killings have not: gotten the attention of the federal justice department.

Attorney General William Barr has indicated that his DOJ will be investigating if there were any civil rights violations involved in the death of Floyd. An appropriate move and one, I hope, tells the people of Minneapolis they are being heard.

It’s unbearable to think this brutal police officer had a reputation for the kind of undue force that led to the death of Floyd and that nothing was ever done about it. One report I saw said he had no less than 17 complaints against him over the years (you’ll have to fact-check me there). How he was still allowed to apprehend suspects and represent officers of the peace is beyond me. But these are things I hope come out in the investigation.

In the meantime, while there’s little comfort to offer Floyd’s family, the best Minneapolis can do is stop destroying their city and get to work honoring the dignity of Floyd’s life, which deserves better than destruction and chaos in his memory. Justice is coming for George Floyd. Let it.

I get into this a bit more on the show today, and I also talk about the administration’s feud with social media. Oh, and I review the joyfully diversionary “Outer Banks” (trailer below), which has kept me sane in a way I didn’t know I needed.

The show lives below on Spotify and you can also find me at iHeart radio, Apple PodcastsFCB Radio’s Spreaker, and Deezer.
