As Election Day draws closer, the nation is focused on the presidential race between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. But along with congressional and state-level races, important local races are also taking place. In the city of Baltimore, several black Republican candidates are seeking local office. These are people like Jovani Patterson, who is running for city council president. I had a conversation with Patterson about the state of the city and how its politics impacts the community.

Patterson, who was born and raised in Baltimore, had some rather interesting things to say about how Baltimore’s Democratic politicians are deliberately keeping a significant portion of the city’s populace in substandard living conditions. Many already know that the Democrats use policies to ensure that black residents don’t achieve the level of success that they want, but they are not aware of the actual steps they take to perpetuate poverty and lack of education.
The candidate also gives a surprising idea of what it’s like running as a black Republican in a predominantly black area. He discusses the differences between how black residents react to him vs white progressives.

But if his insight is any indication, cities like Baltimore do not have to be off-limits for the Republican Party. All that is needed is the willingness to engage in a genuine way and to put forth a sustained effort to earn back the trust of the Black community.
