The presidential race is in a statistical dead heat in North Carolina, which is a critical state that could very well determine the winner of the election. A new poll showed that the state could go either way, which makes it an important race.

A Meredith College poll shows that former Vice President Joe Biden has the thinnest of leads over President Donald Trump in North Caroline. It found that Biden has 45.7 percent support to Trump’s 45.4 percent. The Hill reported that “The president’s competitiveness is fueled by an advantage among independents, who break for him 43.1 percent to 39.8 percent in the poll.”

North Carolina is a critical state for Republicans, as no GOP presidential candidate has won an election without winning this state since Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. David McLennan, Meredith’s poll director, noted that the state would be an important one to watch this year.

He said:

“North Carolina is shaping up to be the key battleground everyone thought it would be heading into the election cycle. Although Trump has gained some ground with key groups like Hispanic voters, he is running behind Biden among suburban voters and women voters, two key groups that will determine the outcome of the presidential race in North Carolina.”

It’s not only the presidential race that makes North Carolina important in November. The Hill pointed out that the state’s senatorial race is also close. “The poll found Democrat Cal Cunningham (D) leading incumbent Sen. Thom Tillis (R), 43.1 percent to 41.8 percent. It’s a gap within the poll’s margin for error,” they wrote.

President Trump’s team has shown that it understands the necessity of winning North Carolina. Both Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have visited the state at least four times each over the past couple of months. The campaign is also making a concerted effort to reach black voters, which make up 23% of the state’s population so that they can peel off a substantial enough chunk to cause Biden to lose the state.

Previously, I wrote about the steps the President is taking to increase his black support in the state. I pointed out that the campaign has “launched radio ads in 11 predominantly black markets on Tuesday. The ad featured former NFL player Herschel Walker, who also made an appearance at the Republican National Convention.”

If President Trump wants to take North Carolina, he must continue to show up in person while Biden remains hidden in his basement. As the former Vice President calls lids every morning, Trump has to stay in front of the people he wants to win. Otherwise, Sleepy Joe may sleep his way into the White House.
