Seattle Police Chief Lays Down A Hard Truth For The 'Defund' Crowd

Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best gave a disturbing dose of truth in a broadcast of KTTH’s “Jason Rantz Show” on Friday. In response to the push to defund or abolish law enforcement agencies, she explained that if these people have their way, it would place residents of the city in danger.

Seattle activists have proposed a 50% cut in funding for the city’s law enforcement agency. On Friday, members of the city council signaled that they would make this proposal into a reality. Best argued that this type of measure would have dire consequences on Seattle residents and make it far more difficult for police to safeguard citizens. During the broadcast, she lashed out at the “Defund the Police” crowd:

“I think you — the word ‘plan’ is rather loose here. They haven’t got a plan. All they’ve shown us is that they want to reduce the budget by 50%. I haven’t seen any real planning in that. And the real tragedy of doing that is that we will lose 1,100 employees. That’s 50% of our total workforce. Because most of our budget is made up of our personnel costs, and it would be a tragedy. I think that it’s the height of recklessness for them to decimate public safety for the city of Seattle without being thoughtful and encouraging public engagement on this issue.”

She continued, pointing out the obvious, “certainly, there would be hundreds of less officers responding to calls for service in the city of Seattle under this current plan — or idea.”

The legislation calls for other changes to be made as well. One of these changes involves moving 911 dispatchers from police control and putting them under a civilian-controlled system. It would also include a fund for a “community-created roadmap to life without policing,” whatever that means.

But it is important to point out that the effort to defund and abolish police departments have little to do with the safety of residents or police brutality. RedState’s Bonchie noted that, “The people behind these pushes at the governmental level are mostly white, liberal elites who figure they’ll never have to deal with the consequences of their virtue signaling.”

This lack of concern on the part of the elites who are the driving force behind the anti-police initiative is not only present in Seattle. It is also prevalent in Minneapolis, MN, which has become an epicenter of sorts of the “Defund the Police” movement.

Despite the fact that black community leaders in the city have loudly condemned the initiative, the Marxist-led Black Lives Matter elements are still attempting to ensure that these residents have less protection from law enforcement. Apparently the folks who claim to value black lives don’t care much for black voices.

It has become clear that the left’s attempt to essentially abolish police forces has nothing to do with black lives, or anyone else’s life for that matter. It is simply another way to push their Marxist agenda. But will they succeed?
