Snohomish County Councilman John Koster is running for Congress in Washington 2 against incumbent Rick Larsen.
Koster is a Dairy Farmer and former State Legislator that previously ran for Congress in 2000 and lost by an excruciatingly close 4% to Larsen. Since then, he won election to Larsen’s seat on the County Council (generally considered a step up in Washington State, at least in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties) and has been re-elected twice, most recently in a 58-41 landslide. Obama won this district, but so did Dino Rossi in ’04 (I think it was close to tied for GWB…can’t find the numbers) and Jack Metcalf held this seat for Republicans between ’94 and ’00 when he honored his self-imposed term limits pledge.
Anyhow, it should be an excellent race. Koster is beloved by the grass roots conservatives in the area, particularly for his work on property rights and taxes.
Here’s some coverage of the race:
Washington State will be an interesting state in ’10, between Koster’s challenge and Baird’s open seat. Those will both be competitive elections.
