There is now a new reason for conservatives to oppose Speaker Boehner’s $1.1 trillion CRomnibus spending bill on top of its full funding of Obamacare for the rest of the fiscal year and its funding of President Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesty for the next 3 months.
That reason is over $100 million dollars tucked away in appropriations for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for the construction, upgrading, and maintenance of federal prisons.
According to Illinois Democrat Sen. “Little” Dick Durbin and Democrat congresswoman [mc_name name=’Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’B001286′ ] a large portion of that money will be sent, because their in no legislative language saying otherwise, to the recently acquired Thomson prison in Thomson, IL.
The federal government bought the never used prison from the state of Illinois two years ago and Durbin and Bustos have been leading the charge to get the prison funded and open.
QC Online has more:
[mc_name name=’Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’D000563′ ]’s office stated the bill gives the Federal Bureau of Prisons the funding necessary “to allocate $43.7 million for equipment and staffing” for Thomson “as well as $15 million for modernization and repairs for the building.”
The reason this should be a major concern is that Thomson prison has been widely considered the likely eventual home of any terrorist detainees currently held at Guantanamo Bay that President Obama cannot release to another country.
Earlier this year President Obama released 5 senior Taliban commanders from Gitmo, to spend a year being supervised by Qatar, in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, a likely deserter. In recent weeks President Obama has released more terrorist from Gitmo this time to South America. It has been President Obama’s stated goal since his first day in office to close Guantanamo and send the terrorist elsewhere. It has been widely speculated that part of the reason Defense Sec. Chuck Hagel was made to leave was because he wasn’t approving the release of Gitmo terrorist fast enough. The thinking is is that President Obama wants Gitmo emptied as much as possible so only a handful of terrorist are brought to the US.
Texas [mc_name name=’Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C001098′ ] and Tennessee congresswoman [mc_name name=’Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’B001243′ ] have been leaders of Republican efforts to keep Thomson prison from opening so that it cannot be used to house Gitmo terrorist and to ensure that a prohibition that is keeping President Obama from sending any Gitmo terrorist into the country remains in place.
Speaker [mc_name name=’Rep. John Boehner (R-OH)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’B000589′ ] on Thursday delayed a vote on the $1.1 trillion CRomnibus after it barely passed a procedural vote and has been working with Democrats to try and get the spending bill passed before a midnight deadline and the onset of a partial shutdown of the governments non-essential functions.
