So you don't like the way Israeli commandos defend themselves?

It started with non-lethal paint balls filled with pepper-spray, which was responded to by pipes and knives. It ended with gunfire.

Guess who won?

After several days of produced uproar which included Hillary Clinton as US Secretary of State “officially” (I bet Obama claims he “wasn’t aware”) condemning Israel, an anonymous IDF Navy Commander said “Next time we’ll use more force“;

“We boarded the ship and were attacked as if it was a war,” the officer said. “That will mean that we will have to come prepared in the future as if it was a war.”

Also released by the IDF is a video (mostly audio) with translated radio chatter and shouts from the IDF boarding party which indicate the boarding party was being fired upon by pistols stolen from two of the commandos who were attacked;

idfnadesk — June 01, 2010 — The IDF commandos, during the operation to redirect the Gaza flotilla, boarded the Mavi Marmara in the early hours of May 31st, 2010. When they attempted to board, activists, in a prepared attack, lynched the soldiers and stole two pistols.

In this footage you can hear the radio exchange between soldiers on their way to the bridge and the IDF ship. The soldiers report encountering live fire and serious violence.

In the “So what were you thinking, idiot?” department, former US Ambassador Edward Peck to Mauritania [link included because I didn’t know where in the heck it was either] was playing the Cynthia McKinney role on this particular visit. Peck says he was “asleep” when the ruckus began. Of course, asleep or not, he knows Israel was in the wrong;

Peck said he remained “disappointed that Israel” chose to respond the way it had to what he called a humanitarian mission.

The vessel former Ambassador Peck was on apparently chose not to violently resist;

The boat he sailed on was far from the main center of violence on Turkish ship Marmara, and the people on board were carrying construction material and medical equipment they planned to transfer to the Strip’s residents.

After the Israelis gained control of the ship, he said, “they didn’t harm anybody after that. They harmed some folks in getting on board as people tried to block them from taking over. “

Peck said he had “concern that it might have been much rougher on some of the other ships. It was. People were shot. You know, people died on some of the other ships because they resisted. We didn’t. We had already talked amongst ourselves as to what we were going to do. I got there too late to lock arms around the wheelhouse because it was all over by that time.

Obviously by thinking ahead about “locking arms around the wheelhouse” he did in fact know that the blockade would be run, whether or not he knew there would be some attempting to martyr themselves in a “suicide by commando” is unclear.

What is clear is the in the United States, conservatives stand with Israel, via Michele Bachmann writing at Townhall.com;;

While the world decries the actions of Israel, I think it’s imperative that the United States stand strong with their ally. I support Israel’s position to stop and inspect peace missions headed to Gaza for national security purposes and the U.S. should reiterate our support for Israel and stand by them throughout the peace process in the Middle East.
