So now we know that Omar Gonzalez penetrated the White House far beyond the North Entrance. In fact, he made it all the way to the East Room, passing a stairway to the family residence on the second floor. Bad enough that they left the door unlocked. But this news takes things to a whole new level.
No matter how incompetent you think the Secret Service is, what’s being described requires a combination of mistakes that, um, has a very low probability of actually happening. Which leads me to two hypotheses:
- The Secret Service has decided to stop protecting the President. I personally find this hypothesis simply unacceptable.
- Someone diverted Secret Service protection to allow Mr. Gonzalez this extended access.
Regarding hypothesis 2, I’ve been worried for some time about an October Surprise from the White House. One worrisome possibility is an assassination attempt — orchestrated by Valerie Jarrett and company. If I’m right — and I sure hope I’m wrong — this was merely a dress rehearsal to see if the Secret Service could be successfully diverted.
My lovely wife thinks I’m paranoid. But she also found this way too believable.
