Was Florida Governor Rick Scott an Abortion Provider?

This week Florida’s Senate seat opened up when [mc_name name=’Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’R000595′ ] announced his run for President. Both current Gov. Rick Scott and former Congressman and Attorney General Bill McCollum may be potential candidates in the Republican primary. When these two ran for Governor in 2010 Scott came from nowhere to defeat McCollum with an advertising blitz that painted him as not conservative on a few hot button issues.

Scott’s attack claimed Bill McCollum both helped abortion providers and that his employer took $100,000 from abortion providers. This claim was based on McCollum filing a bill in Congress to help hospitals and later working for a lobbying firm that represented the trade association Federation of American Hospitals. Basically Scott claimed that helping hospitals was the same as helping abortion providers. Hospitals provide abortions so there was truth in that claim. McCollum did not work directly for hospitals while at that firm.

Amazingly, Scott was the head and founder of the nation’s largest for-profit hospital chain, the Columbia Hospital Corporation. His company was the dominant organization in the trade association that later hired McCollum. It’s true that his hospitals did provide abortions and by his own logic that makes him an abortion provider. During his years as a hospital leader about 1.3 million abortions were done every year with about 5% done in hospitals. Most were done in for-profit hospitals while many non-profit Christian hospitals had restrictions against abortions.
