Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more…
Looking back on the past two years, I’m amazed at what a novice I was upon entering the fray. A man well seasoned in the experiences of life, yet, so naive in so many ways in the world of politics. Alas, what an education it has been! I now feel as if I’ve gained a lifetime of knowledge in such a short period of time…
The tea party movement exploded on the scene because average Americans had reached a saturation point with our government. We saw individuals in a far away place making unilateral decisions that directly affected our lives, yet, these actions defied logic. It was easy to see that these decisions were just a culmination of a litany of equally senseless decisions.
So the people arose…and in the process, we learned that our elected officials were indifferent to how we felt. In many cases, there was little more than contempt on their part for the people. We became keenly aware of the rampant corruption and self serving interests of those who acted on our behalf. We learned first hand that the media in this country had long since ceased to be an effective watchdog and that we could trust no one, that we were in this battle alone.
Yet, all this awareness only seemed to spur us on to greater heights. Millions of Americans were getting engaged! What an incredible feeling it was, seeing so many like minded individuals coming together to say ‘enough’! It was a time of great hope, a time were the impossible suddenly didn’t seem to be so impossible.
And, then, almost as if it were a voice from above, the nature of man began to reveal itself once again. As the people were awakening to a sober reality, so too were others. Looking upon this incredible force that manifested itself in the voice of the people, and seeing the natural leadership vacuum that occurs in any such grassroots movement, the huckster’s and opportunists seized the moment.
And, what would be expected is exactly what has occurred. We see it all across this land, at the local, state and national level. Ego, greed and the quest for power have infected this tremendous movement, surely as a virus infects the human body. The constant infighting, back stabbing and jockeying for power that is now prevalent in the tea party movement is an exact reflection of the halls of government. Not very surprising when you understand that government itself is but a reflection of society as a whole.
So, has the tea party movement evolved into precisely that which we sought to destroy?
There will be those who refuse to accept this observation, the eternal optimist in them will cast a shadow over a hard reality. After all, ‘it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts’. In this spirit of our forefathers, I ask you; ‘Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not?’
So, once again, the people are alone…
Perhaps, this is God’s plan all along. While recognizing the afflictions upon this land, we, the people, continue to look to those who’ve created the hardship, those who’ve gained a king’s ransom in the process, to deliver us from this evil. And, having failed in that quest, we then look amongst ourselves for this salvation. Yet, until we return to God and heal the moral decay of this nation, we will continue to search in vain for deliverance from the forces aligned against us.
Alas, true optimism is seeking a return to the principles and values that will guard us against such a foe. Knowing that ‘the millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us.’ Accepting the reality that ‘there is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations…‘
