Making A Case for Rick Santorum

I watched the CNN debate last night and I’m in agreement with everyone else who saw the debate. Rick Santorum was, and has been in recent debates the only adult in the room. He’s been the most reasonable and the most mature when it comes to the debate environment and the petty chick fight between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. He’s the only one capable of taking it to Mitt Romney with coherent political attacks based on substance and not personal bull.

I admit it took me a while to realize just how polished Rick Santorum is as a candidate because well, this entire race has been a cosmetic disaster. We’ve been focused on rivalries between Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. We’ve been focused on the personal plight of now former candidate Herman Cain. Instead of finding out what he knew about foreign policy people wanted to know if he was tapping tail during his stint as the head of the NRA (National Restaurant Association). So while Perry, Cain, Huntsman, Bachmann, and Pawlenty all fell victim to circumstances, some of which were self imposed, Rick Santorum has remained the quiet conservative who was visibly frustrated by the superficial attention paid to Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

The only reason those two are getting so much coverage is because they hate each other. In that regard I place the blame on the media, but what about the voters in our party who willingly support these two unelectable arrogant attention whores? What do Newt Gingrich supporters see in him that keeps them from taking a serious second look at Rick Santorum? What the hell is wrong with you people, seriously? Flat out you’re a moron if you support Newt Gingrich

Rick Santorum is every bit as conservative without the baggage and he’s not going to shoot himself in the foot. I’m not criticizing Newt by on any personal beef because I don’t know the damn man. But it just annoys me how he’s been able to garner so much support from the so called conservative base over a man in Rick Santorum who by all accounts is more consistently conservative.

So what is it? Do you guys like the sound of a colony on the moon? Or Newt referring to himself in the third person like former WWE wrestler The Rock? Are you turned on sexually by the open marriage thing? Are you into multiple marriages? Perhaps Newt solidifies the swinger vote in the Republican party and that’s where his support comes from. I don’t know but I just don’t understand why conservatives and why Tea Party voters keep standing by this dude.

We as conservatives need to balance what we feel in our heart and what we know in our minds to be the right choice going forward. Freakin’ Newt Gingrich ain’t the right choice. I know Romney is a weak candidate and Obama would beat him in a close election, but Newt would get dusted like he stole something in a general election against Obama.

So I appeal to your intelligence and ask that you take a second look at Rick Santorum. The guy comes to “get it” as we saw in the boxing world and he does so without coming off as petty or negative. Last night he went after Romney in a way that was effective and he got support from the crowd. Rick understands that if you attack Romney on substance and on his record you can knock him off his game. Personal attacks and attacks on Romney’s tax returns and financial dealings won’t do it.

But I plead Rick Santorum’s case accepting the fact that despite it being the worst thing they can do at a moment when the race is still up in the air, and 2012 being a winnable year for the GOP, conservatives will line up behind Newt as the alternative to Romney and there they’ll go with Newt right off the freakin’ cliff. You nominate Newt Gingrich and you give Obama the election, you nominate Rick Santorum and we have a real shot to reverse course. Use your head because this is the only chance we have. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?
