Memorial Day

This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend and while everyone will be playing golf, BBQing, and having fun with friends, I want to make sure that everyone remember what this day means. My friend Penguin over at RedState has a great post to get people in the right frame of mind.

Where Have All the Flags Gone? We need to remember what our men and women in the Military sacrifice to keep our country safe from harm and to keep out way of life. They go to far away places with not much reward to keep us safe. They leave family and friends behind.

IT IS THE SOLDIER

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Many of our brave men and women do not come back home. These soldiers paid the ultimate price for out freedoms we take for granite. And this weekend, especially Monday is a day to set out of our lives to pay our respects for these brave souls.

I know it is great to have the long weekend and a good time to spend with the family and friends. But remember who gave us the ability to live in the greatest country in the world. And fly the Stars and Stripes to honor those that paid with their lives for us.
