Congressman Vern Buchanan has filed the Balance Budget Amendment to the US Constitution for consideration in the House. This Amendment (presumably the 28th) would require the President to submit a balanced budget to Congress and more debt can only be authorized by a 3/5 vote of both Houses of Congress. There are exemptions for time of war and national emergencies.
In 1980, before the election of Ronald Reagan, we came within one State of calling for a Constitutional Convention over this issue. After Reagan was elected we just kind of forgot about it. If we had this amendment over the last 30 years, we wouldn’t be staring at 14 trillion of debt and the resultant debt service that goes along with it. Write to your legislators and urge them to bring this BBA to a vote.
