It's Pelosi not Limbaugh Who Needs to Apologize to Fluke

So the latest media manufactured controversy swirls around contraception,  activist Sandra Fluke, and Rush Limbaugh.

If you don’t know the story, Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown law student and former president of Students for Reproductive Justice was selected for a taped Congressional hearing on contraceptive coverage. She specifically sought Georgetown because she knew they didn’t cover contraception and wanted to do battle over it.   Fluke claims she and her classmates are emotionally , medically, and financially burdened because of the flawed policy.   In her testimony at the Congressional hearing,  she said,

“On a daily basis, I heard from yet another woman from Georgetown or other schools or who works for a religiously affiliated employer who has suffered financial, emotional, and medical burdens becuase of this lack of contraceptive coverage.”

Fluke also admits she’s on a “public interest scholarship” which sounds like a fancy way of saying her education is paid for by the taxpayer and   now she wants someone else to pay for her contraception too.   Obama believes her actions make her a hero worthy of a personal call, Limbaugh believes her actions make her…well,  I’ll just let Rush say it himself,

“What does it say about the college co-ed Sandra Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex? What does that make her?” Limbaugh said on his radio show on Wednesday. “It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps.”

I’m not thrilled with the choice of Rush’s words but he’s never been one to hold back and if she’s going to use the megaphone of a Congressional hearing to speak her mind, she’s going to have to expect that Rush might use the golden EIB microphone to say what he thinks about her.   “Joe the Plumber” endured it from the left, now it’s “Sandra the student” who must endure it from the right.   As a law student surely Fluke knows by now  that free speech is written into our Constitution but free sex isn’t.

But since this is a religious institution, let’s go beyond the Constitution and appeal to a higher standard.   What would Jesus do if Fluke approached the Savior and not Congress?

Our best example is found in John 4.   A Samaritan woman met Jesus at a well and asked Him for “living water”  which only He has the power to give.   Instead of immediately granting her request, Jesus told  her to go call her her husband and come back.

“I have no husband.”  she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.  The fact is you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband..  What you have said is quite true.”

Basically, Jesus boldly told her to quit playing the field, get married, and stay married.   Should Jesus apologize for being Insensitive and rude in her time of need?  I hardly think so.

Perhaps  if a Catholic Congresswoman who believes in the power of  THE WORD and seeks to give it voice in pubic policy  should have boldly repeated the words of Jesus, “Go call her husband and come back.” to Fluke  there would have been no need for a further response from Rush.    It’s Congresswoman Pelosi that failed to respond properly to Fluke  not Rush Limbaugh.

UPDATE:  Rush apologizes.
