How Not To Let The Leftist Media Pick Our Nominee

Democrat media have stepped up their attacks on Republican presidential candidates, to help elect Hillary Clinton and to drive traffic to their web sites, but mostly to drive traffic to their web sites. Conservatives and Republicans should not give the media cover by joining in these attacks on one another.

I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.
I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.

Sadly, many Republicans are acting like people being chased by a bear, hoping to be the last one still running. The media are destroying our candidates one by one, and we are not just allowing it, but participating in it with the hope that our guy will be the last one standing.

Instead of attacking one another over trivial issues, Republican candidates and their followers should compete by attacking Democrats, as the need arises, and should be relentless and unwavering in supporting limitations on government to advance our freedom and prosperity agenda.

While [mc_name name=’Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’R000595′ ] and Ben Carson are currently getting most of the scrutiny, that will change should either or both of them fall out of the top tier.

We are not surprised any more when our major media attacks Republicans and defends Democrats. Andrew Breitbart called it the “Democrat Media Complex,” because the Democrat Party and the leftists in media march in lockstep. Republicans and conservatives need to be aware that these people are our adversaries, to be ready for them, and to avoid using media attacks on one another.

As Florida-based poltical consultant Rick Wilson writes, we should not expect them to change in response to our whining about unfair treatment. They’re proud of their unfair treatment of conservatives. Republican candidates just have to be better, and be ready.

Always read the media critically

I admit to being taken in by the Politico’s fabricated allegation that Ben Carson lied about being offered a scholarship to West Point.

Reading the story, alarm bells started going off. My thinking was similar to what Ben Shapiro wrote:

Politico followed up on this story. They reported one additional piece of information that seems to conflict with Carson’s story: Carson never applied to West Point, and was never extended admission. But Carson never said he applied. He said he was extended a full scholarship offer. What’s more, West Point doesn’t offer scholarships: all admission is free contingent on serving in the military afterwards. It thus seems probable that Westmoreland or another military figure tried to recruit Carson, telling him that he wouldn’t have to pay for his education – and that Carson read that as a “full scholarship,” and never applied.

The attacks on Marco Rubio were even easier to see through, because Redstate (that is, I) found that Crist loyalists in the Florida GOP were using the silly stuff against Rubio back in 2010.

Your Action Plan

Always read leftist media reports critically, because:

  1. The leftist media lie.
  2. If the leftist media accurately report a fact, it’s in service of a larger, more complex lie.

When reading leftist media, always assume they are lying to you in some way. Your job is to figure out what they are admitting and what they are lying about.

  • See Moe Lane’s Zen and the Art of Partisan Hackery flow chart
  • Resist the need to be the first one on social media with your particular comment on some story critical of Republicans
  • Read the last paragraph first
  • Get a transcript
  • Watch which Republicans join in leftist media attacks, and gently guide them away from that path

Republicans are guilty of wanting to be fair, when the other side has no such compunction. We don’t have to be fair, we just have to be right.

There are enough real, substantive problems with our candidates that we can ignore trivia. And do not think for a minute that your candidate will be nominated on the basis of surviving media hits — or if they do, it will be because the leftist media saved their worst attacks for the general election.
