Every two years, the Democrats pull out that tired old chestnut, discrimination against women in the workplace in both pay and performance expectations. While it is apparently a little known fact bordering on a state secret, laws have actually been passed to deal with those issues. Federal laws. And, in fact, a whole independent federal agency was created to enforce those laws. I know. I used to work for them. Here’s the thing. Discrimination against women in pay is and has been illegal since 1963. The Equal Pay Act (the older EPA) which prohibits paying women less for doing the same job as a man, was passed in 1963. In 1965 Congress passed Title VII of the Civil Rights Act which, as currently configured prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, sex, religion, or disability. It also created the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The EEOC publishes statistics about the work that it does. The EEOC receives charges of discrimination. investigates them, attempts to resolve them, and if unable to reach an agreement, files lawsuits to enforce the law. Such lawsuits are civil lawsuits in which the government is the plaintiff seeking to obtain relief for the victims of discrimination
You would think that if discrimination were as rampant as Democrats claim it is, that the EEOC would be up to its eyeballs in lawsuits. You would be wrong. Either there is not as much discrimination under Obama or George Bush cares more about ending discrimination than Obama di or there is very little discrimination going on . Either way the Dems, are as usual, not telling the truth. Here are the numbers. From 2001 to 2007 (the first 7 years of the Bush Administration) The EEOC filed 2800 federal lawsuits alleging discrimination in violation of the various anti-discrimination acts it is charged with enforcing. From 2009 to 2015 (the first 7 years of the Obama administration) only 1529 lawsuits were filed, about 54% of the number filed when the agency was lead by people appointed by George W. Bush.
With regard to lawsuits filed specifically alleging Equal Pay Act violations the numbers are stark. Under Bush during the same time period listed above, 38 alleged Equal Pay Act violations. Under Obama only 22 were filed. So here’s the thing, if women really aren’t making as much money as men because of discrimination, and if the Democrats are the people who really care about this issue, then why aren’t they out there suing the people who violate these laws? Its easy to claim vast discrimination. Its easy to say someone should pass a law about that. Oh wait. The law was passed more than 60 years ago. So then, we just need to enforce the law. I mean, if you say murder is wrong and people should be punished, doesn’t that mean you hire cops to go out and catch the murderers and put them in jail (Oh wait. The Dems don’t do that either) Caring isn’t just about talk. Its about doing. When it comes down to it, the Dems are just demagoguing an issue which they care nothing about in reality.
When it comes down to job discrimination against women, compared to Republican administrations, the Democrats are missing in action.
