Why Palin Might Want to Trademark her Name

First, let me say, that the story as reported is that the application doesn’t bear Palin’s signature. Further, the description of the application is that it did not include any examples of commercial use so it is not at all clear that Mrs. Palin had anything to do with the application.  But, supposing that there was such an attempt, Trademarking might allow Mrs. Palin to have a greater degree of control over how her image is used.  See for example this comic book, a commercial publication, or these dolls.  These particular examples are not particularly disrespectful, but many uses of her image go beyond the pale.  It is not clear whether trademarking her image would prevent those commercial uses in a political campaign but it is a possible strategy.
