Liberals Redefining Patriotism?

Not long after 9/11, President George W. Bush made famous his phrase “You’re either with us or against us in the fight against terror.” He was making those remarks towards foreign governments who were known to have had assisted Islamist terrorists, most notably Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Libya. Bush was helping to rally the country for the long fight ahead, trying to ratchet up the patriotic fervor after the devastating terrorist attacks that occurred on that day. Somewhere along the way, American liberals, including those in Congress and the media, tried to persuade the rest of the American people that Bush was actually impugning them, many of whom were uncomfortable (which has turned into outright hostility by many liberals, although clearly not all) about the U.S. being in an actual war; the liberals were saying Bush was questioning their patriotism. Ask them where this is and all you get are either blank stares or a change of the subject. They can’t answer because it doesn’t exist; Bush has never questioned the patriotism of any American.

Since then, liberals have begun redefining what patriotism is. They will say dissent is the highest form of patriotism. They will say the election of Barack Obama was patriotic, and liberals can now show their patriotic love of country after the “shame” of the Bush years. It even led Joe Biden to utter the ridiculous sentiment that the wealthy paying more in taxes was “patriotic”, despite the fact that the wealthy already pay nearly all the income taxes received by the government (except from rich liberals like Marc Rich, Tim Geithner, Tom Daschle, Nancy Kellifer, Hilda Solis’ husband, etc.).

Now we come to find out that even President Barack Obama may be redefining patriotism to include the federal government’s mortgaging of America’s future with Porkulus. Via the great NewsBusters, the New York Times is reporting that both Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and the President himself have congratulated the three Senate Republicans for their patriotic duty in getting Porkulus passed:

Mr. Obama dispatched his chief of staff to Capitol Hill to help conclude the talks and reassure senators in his own party, and he called three key Republicans to applaud them for their patriotism.

Mr. Obama called Ms. Collins and Mr. Specter, as well as Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, another Republican expected to support the deal, to acknowledge they were acting against pressure from their party and, one official said, to thank them for their patriotism in helping advance the bill at a critical time.

Now, the Times doesn’t mention who told them about Emanuel, but cite one of their famous “anonymous sources” (remember the ones who were cited as saying McCain was having an affair with a lobbyist?) in regards to the Obama call. So you can take it with a grain of salt; it wouldn’t be unheard of for the Times to embellish (ok, fabricate) something positive regarding anything Obama does, although the call may have taken place exactly as described. If it did happen that way, however, it would be a shameful act by the President, who would then be questioning the patriotism of the 216 other Republicans in Congress, and the 11 House Democrats (that’s 42% of Congress), who do not support Porkulus. And we’d have it on record.

Liberals (leftists) have a bad habit of redefining words to fit their own twisted agenda. They need to be called on it whenever it’s shown. Each. And. Every. Time.

And when it comes to love of country, it doesn’t matter who the President is, or what political party they belong to. Always remember the words of the great Stephen Decatur:

“Our Country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong.”
