The issue of Barack Obama’s tendency to tell voters one thing on foreign policy while telling actual foreign governments something else initially gained currency during The Ohio Democratic Primary. He told a debate audience he would renegotiate NAFTA. He had warned Canada already not to worry about what he had to tell the rubes in order to win. He was against; before he was for it.

The trust issue regarding Obama’s diplomatic conduct has again raised its hoary, evil visage. New York Post columnist/ Nefarious CONSERVATIVE, Amir Taheri suggested strongly that Barack Obama had attempted to interfere with ongoing negotiations to withdraw US troops from Iraq.

He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington,” Zebari said in an interview, according to Taheri.

“However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open,” Zebari reportedly said.

John McCain fell upon Obama’s fortuitous fumble. He had the unmitigated gall to describe it as an “egregious act of political interference by a presidential candidate seeking political advantage overseas.” The Obama campaign quickly convened their war room.

Wendy Morigi then drew the unenviable task of serving as the Obama campaign’s Mouth of Sauron. She both denied and admitted that Barack Obama had told the Iraqi’s to delay the ongoing negotiations.

But Obama’s national security spokeswoman Wendy Morigi said Taheri’s article bore “as much resemblance to the truth as a McCain campaign commercial.”

In fact, Obama had told the Iraqis that they should not rush through a “Strategic Framework Agreement” governing the future of US forces until after President George W. Bush leaves office, she said.

So the story had about as much truth as a John McCain campaign commercial. And guess what? It was absolutely correct. Confound that Mavarick for egregiously telling people the truth! But then again, she tells us, it wasn’t. Morigi digs in and defends the indefensible.

“Barack Obama has never urged a delay in negotiations, nor has he urged a delay in immediately beginning a responsible drawdown of our combat brigades,” Morigi said.

So how is not urging a delay in negotiations different from urging them not to rush through a strategic framework? The two are one and the same. Particularly, when the negotiations take place in order to establish a strategic framework under which the withdrawal of the aforementioned combat brigades can take place in a reasoned and orderly fashion. Perhaps Barack Obama would rather the Iraqis establish the rules, by-laws and conditions for the next iteration of the Multi-Cultural Desert Classic Circle-Jerk.

“These outright distortions will not changes the facts — Senator Obama is the only candidate who will safely and responsibly end the war in Iraq and refocus our attention on the real threat: a resurgent Al-Qaeda and Taliban along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border.”

Well yes, if he can successfully sabotage everyone else’s efforts to negotiate a withdrawal, he becomes that candidate by default. It’s a good thing that Charlie Gibson and ABC are asking him all those hard-hitting questions about how he learned to interpret The Logan Act during his tenure as a Constitutional Law Professor.
