25 Years Since 1984 – How Are We Doing?

George Orwells classic book 1984 is the story of one man’s pursuit of individuality while living in a totalitarian nightmare:  a world dominated by Big Brother, The Party, and the Thought Police.  If you read the book several years ago, read it again.  You will be shocked at the parallels that you can now draw between the book and recent news.

Below are excerpts from the book.  As you read them, consider the general differences between the two political ideologies in America:

Liberal Thought

Conformity of Opinion

Wealth Re-distribution

Governmental Power

Conservative Thought

Independent Thought

Representative Government

The Suppression of Independent Thought

“The heresy of heresies was common sense…The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.”  Pg 80-81

Consider the common-sense concerns shared by millions of Americans, but which Washington wishes you to reject:

How can we spend our way out of debt?

As America approaches bankruptcy, how can we afford a $1,500,000,000,000 government-run healthcare plan?

Will a massive Cap and Trade energy tax crush our economy?

What about our unfunded liabilities of $100 trillion?  see http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124458888993599879.html for more info

Could our exploding money supply create Zimbabwe-like hyper-inflation? see http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601110&sid=avgZDYM6mTFA for more info

“…a nation of warriors and fanatics, marching forward in perfect unity, all thinking the same thoughts and shouting the same slogans, perpetually working, fighting, triumphing, persecuting – three hundred million people all with the same face.”  Pg 74

Ironically, America now has a population of 300 million.  And any of those 300 million who are not thinking the same thoughts as the Obama administration are labeled as:

 Domestic Right Wing Terrorists!

Treacherous Leaders!

An Angry Mob!

“He picked up the children’s history book and looked at the portrait of Big Brother which formed its frontispiece.  The hypnotic eyes gazed into his own.  It was as though some huge force were pressing down upon you – something that penetrated inside your skull, battering against your brain, frightening you out of your beliefs, persuading you, almost, to deny the evidence of your senses…” Pg 80

Have you seen the real-time debt clock?  The Party would like for you to deny this evidence.  http://www.usdebtclock.org/

“Parsons was Winston’s fellow employee at the Ministry of Truth.  He was a fattish but active man of paralyzing stupidity, a mass of imbecile enthusiasms – one of those completely unquestioning, devoted drudges on whom, more even than on the Thought Police, the stability of the Party depended. “  Pg 22

Is Washington counting on men and women of “paralyzing stupidity”?

“…she had without exception the most stupid, vulgar, empty mind that he had ever encountered…there was no imbecility, absolutely none, that she was not capable of swallowing if the Party handed it out to her. “  Pg 66

Is Washington counting on men and women to swallow the imbecility that they are handing out?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week.  And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week.  Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours?  Yes, they swallowed it.  Parsons swallowed it easily, with the stupidity of an animal. “  Pg 58

Hurray!  The chocolate ration has been raised to 20 grams!

Hurray!  The cost of the Stimulus Plan was trimmed and driven down from $868 billion to an almost trifling$789 billion!  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/12/us/politics/12stimulus.html

The Pursuit of Raw Power

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake…Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness; only power, pure power…We are different from all the oligarchies of the past…The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never that the courage to recognize their own motives.  They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they seized power unwillingly and for a limited time…We are not like that.  We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it.”  Pg 263

Go back and read it again.  Does the unwillingly and limited time language remind you of any current-day power-grab?  Heres a hint: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJzRfCztcI8&feature=related

[T]he Party…sought power because men in the mass were frail, cowardly creatures who could not endure liberty or face the truth, and must be ruled over and systematically deceived by others who were stronger than themselves…”  Pg 262

No comment is needed for this one. ..

The new aristocracy was made up of bureaucrats, scientists, technicians, trade-union organizers, publicity experts, sociologists, teachers, journalists, and professional politicians. ..As compared with their opposite numbers in past ages, they were less avaricious, less tempted by luxury, hungrier for pure power, and, above all, more conscious of what they were doing and more intent on crushing opposition.  This last difference was cardinal.  By comparison with that existing today, all the tyrannies of the past were half-hearted and inefficient.”  Pg 205

Just as reflected in “1984”, this current administration:

Seems to place a minimal emphasis on wealth-building (they appear less avaricious and less tempted by luxury)

But is hungrier for pure power (as evidenced by the government take-over of financial institutions, the auto industry, and an attempt at the health care industry)

And appears to be intent on crushing the opposition (watch the vicious attacks on those who disagree with this administration)

The Youth

“It was almost normal for people over thirty to be frightened of their own children.  And with good reason, for hardly a week passed in which the Times did not carry a paragraph describing how some eavesdropping little sneak – “child hero” was the phrase generally used – had overheard some compromising remark and denounced his parents to the Thought Police.  Pg 24

Lets remember the incredible spectacle of the White House website calling for people to inform on their friends and family.  Obama actually wanted the email address of anyone who was believed to be spreading dis-information on health care.

“With those children, he thought, that wretched woman must lead a life of terror.  Another year, two years, and they would be watching her night and day for symptoms of unorthodoxy. .. the worship of Big Brother – it was all a sort of glorious game to them.  All their ferocity was turned outwards, against the enemies of the State, against foreigners, traitors, saboteurs, thought-criminals.”  Pg 24

Obama’s nationwide address to students initially included lesson plans which encouraged students to write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president.

A few school indoctrination videos sure to put a knot in your stomach:

“The only recognized purpose of marriage was to beget children for service of the Party…There were even organizations such as the Junior Anti-Sex League which advocated complete celibacy for both sexes.  All children were to be begotten by artificial insemination…and brought up in public institutions.”  Pg 65

A few of the first steps:

The HR 3200 health care bill actually allows for government workers to enter peoples homes (euphemistically referred to as home visitation), and educate parents on parenting practices.   See Pg 842-845 of the health care bill:  http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&docid=f:h3200ih.txt.pdf

Re-Writing History

We’re going to have to make sacrifices, we’re going to have to change our conversation, we’re going to have to change our traditions, our history…”  Michelle Obama http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afGz0dzVSIU

And when memory failed, and written records were falsified – when that happened, the claim of the Party to have improved the conditions of human life had got to be accepted, because there did not exist, and never again could exist, any standard against which it could be tested.”  Pg 93

The memory of 9/11 has already begun to fade, thanks to our government re-defining it as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

“If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say of this or that event, it never happened – that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death…And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed – if all records told the same tale – then the lie passed into history and became truth.”  Pg 34

It is the responsibility of every American citizen to ensure that this statement doesnt become a reality.

“It might be true that the average human being was better off now than he had been before the Revolution.  The only evidence to the contrary was the mute protest in your own bones, the instinctive feeling that the conditions you lived in were intolerable and that at some other time they must have been different.”  Pg 73

Is this the life we will leave to future generations?

If you don’t have a copy of 1984, I encourage you to buy or order it ($9.99 at Amazon.com  http://www.amazon.com/1984-Signet-Classics-George-Orwell/dp/0451524934).  This book, read in light of current events, demands that we be honest with ourselves.

Read the book and highlight passages that are concerning or seem vaguely familiar.  Be aware as you watch current events unfold, and most likely you will begin to see parallels.  As stated in an editorial review of the book by Amazon.com, “…Nineteen Eighty-Four is a rare work that grows more haunting as its futuristic purgatory becomes more real… it ranks among the most terrifying novels ever written.

Americans must stop this Orwellian nightmare from taking root in our country.  And we must act before it’s too late.  Subjecting our children a future of unimaginable horror, as depicted in this book, is unconscionable.
