The Washington State Caucus: A First Timer's Experience

Today, Saturday, March 03, 2012 Washington State held its Republican Party precinct caucuses.  This was my first time participating in the caucuses and I also had the privilege of being a Caucus Captain for the Rick Santorum campaign.

I arrived at the Legislative District 21 pooled caucus at about 8:45AM, and already there was a line.  The doors were not even scheduled to be unlocked until 9:00AM!  After checking in, and voting in the non binding straw poll, I placed Rick Santorum literature and bumper stickers throughout the venue alongside the other candidates’ literature.

Over the next two hours (So many people showed up, that we started an hours late!), I watched as hundreds of Republicans checked in, gathered literature and talked to other attendees about the issues facing our Great Republic.  The energy in the room was intense!

Prior to the invocation (Praying in public?!?  Awesome!), and the Pledge of Allegiance, a representative from each campaign was given two minutes to talk about their candidate, and why they were supporting said candidate.  I had the honor and privilege of representing Rick Santorum.  I didn’t know this going in, and I had only about one half hour to prepare.   The representative for Ron Paul went first.  Of course, he received a lot of cheers from the Ron Paul followers (as a Paul follower, he was light on substance and heavy on innuendo and slogans).  I went next, and received several bursts of applause and even a standing ovation from some!  I also received some “boos” from the Ron Paul followers, but I would have felt insulted if I hadn’t!  I was followed by representatives for Newt and Mitt.  Generally speaking, everyone was respectful of each other, which was a bit of a surprise to me!

After hearing the speeches and hearing the rules for the remainder of the day, we broke out into our individual precinct groups for the caucus and to elect delegates to attend the Snohomish County Republican Convention.  Again, I feel honored to have been elected to represent my precinct.

A big “Thank you” goes out to all of volunteers and most especially to Elizabeth Scott, former District 21 Representative Candidate, District 21 GOP Chair, GOP Chair for the pooled caucus.  I was inspired by the huge turnout!  Even now, hours later, I find myself filled with energy.  It shows that people are not motivated just for their candidate of choice, but to defeat Barack Obama and take our Republic back in November!  Remember, no matter who your candidate of choice is, our motto must be “Anyone but Obama in 2012!”

Below, please find the speech that I made on behalf of Rick Santorum.

“Ronald Reagan once spoke of the three legged stool of Conservatism:  Fiscal conservatism, social conservatism and a strong national defense.  Rick Santorum is a man who embodies all of these.

Rick’s eight years on the Senate Armed Services Committee gave him a critical understanding of national defense and foreign policy challenges.  He used this experience to author such important legislation as the Syria Accountability Act and the Iran Freedom and Support Act, designed to fight terrorism and terrorist states.

Rick has fought to protect families and the unborn.  He’s been a consistent proponent of preserving traditional marriage.  He authored and passed critical anti-abortion legislation ending partial birth abortion, and wrote legislation to protect children from internet predators.

Rick has pledged that as President, he will cut $5 trillion from the budget and ask and campaign for a balanced budget amendment to the US Constitution.

Rick has pledged to fight for a repeal of Obamacare and all of Obama’s job killing regulations.

Rick believes in American manufacturing and will lower taxes on manufacturing companies in America to zero.

Mr. Santorum believes that America can and should be energy independent.  That’s why he’s said that he will approve the Keystone Pipeline on his first day as President.  As well as opening our coastal waters for drilling, he has promised to open federal lands and ANWR for domestic energy production.

All these points demonstrate why Rick Santorum is the best candidate to run against President Obama.  He not only believes and fights for Conservative values, he lives them.

Thank you for your consideration.”
