Shut Up and Be Tolerant, Redneck!

“Shut up and be tolerant, redneck” they screamed.

As you may have heard, Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame has been suspended. And what did Phil do or say that offended to get booted from TV? He quoted from the Bible. Specifically, he said in an interview with GQ

“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong,” he says. “Sin becomes fine.”

What, in your mind, is sinful?

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

And if that sounds super judgey, he went on to say:

“We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job,” Robertson says. “ We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus – whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?”

So there you have it.

Was Phil provocative? You bet. Did Phil say something untrue? Take a look at Leviticus 20:13-16 and see for yourself.

But should Phil lose his job over this? Come on.

Martin Bashir famously said someone should defecate in Sarah Palin’s mouth on the air and it took weeks for MSNBC to get around to forcing him to quit. Here, the Duck Dynasty star responded to a question about sin in our culture and he answered according to his religious beliefs, and the punishment was handed down within minutes! Robertson’s suspension might’ve taken weeks if he had suggested gays get treated like Sarah Palin. But quote from Holy Scripture? Get that guy off the air immediately!

It’s too bad for Phil that he quoted views disapproving homosexuality that come from his Christian faith. Had he lashed out at homosexuals out of anger by calling them toxic little queens, Robertson would still be on TV doing credit card ads.

It’s also too bad that Phil Robertson believes in morality instead of liberal “anything goes.” Quote the Bible: get kicked off TV; commit perjury: keynote speaker at the DNC. Phil would be a hero to the left if all his fans booed God instead of glorified Him.

Now, A&E Network can do whatever it wants with Phil Robertson. He’s an employee of a private company, and not being censored by the government. It’s not like he’s being fired for speaking out against Obamacare.

Actions have consequences.

But A&E’s actions also have consequences. If conservatives rally ’round Phil the way we rallied around Chick-Fil-A, the duck dynastar will come out a winner.

But the liberal hypocrites should wake up and be the tolerance they preach. As conservarive Tammy Bruce wrote:

The gay civil rights effort was about making sure we weren’t punished for being who we are. Time the left applies that same value to others.
