Thoughts of a Pro-Life Libertarian

I am pro-life. I want the mother and child to live. I also know that abortions will continue to happen. Though I am against them, there are some things I would like to see change.

In regards to education, I believe safe sex should be taught in the school. At home, it’s the parents’ choice how they want to approach it. At school though, they should dispel the myths that all kids believe (e.g. – you don’t get pregnant the first time you have sex). I believe they should also teach the likelihood of catching STD’s while using a condom. What the STD’s will do to your body if not caught in time. We are talking about the human body here. It’s an awesome piece of machinery.

I believe that the clinics should be completely open about how the procedure is done. What complications can happen. What effect it will have on her hormones. The effect it will have on her body and her mind. It’s needs to be treated like an elective surgery, because that’s basically what it is.

So that brings us to the medical portion of what I would like to see change. Women would have a follow-up appointment two weeks after the procedure. They should have access to a counselor if they are having behavioral/emotional issues. The clinics would be treated like any other outpatient surgical clinic. They would be inspected regularly and shut down if the place is unsanitary. The staff should be medically trained in case something goes wrong. The doctor would have be a board certified OB-GYN. The quality of life is important. No woman should be maimed or killed because of this procedure.

Unfortunately, a lot of these clinics are money mills. They can charge any amount they want. No one will sue or complain. The worst abortion clinic that I’ve ever heard of was the one of Kermit Gosnell. The grand jury report was truly eye opening. Only read if you have a strong stomach and have some time to read the whole thing.

There will always be the great abortion debate going on, but can we at least agree on these things?
