Democratic legislators in the US are set to approve hundreds of billions of dollars in funding to deal with the financial crisis and are also preparing a multibillion- dollar stimulus package, Congressional aides said on Friday.

Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives, has told President George W. Bush she will keep Congress in session to work on legislation to take toxic private sector assets on to the government’s books.

But she is also pushing for a new stimulus package that would include support for the US car industry as well as longstanding Democratic demands, such as infrastructure investment, extended unemployment insurance and healthcare assistance.

Right. Because the last stimulus package worked so well.
