Independence Day

Keep in mind that July 4th is more than just hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, soda, beer, and fireworks.  It is the celebration of independence.  Independence from a tyrannical government that took a revolution like the world had never seen before and has never seen since to remove.  The goal was not to kill the monarch or loot the parliament.  It was not fought to replace one tyranny for another.  It was fought for this unique group of peoples to be left alone to experiment with what works on a local level to address various problems that aren’t exactly the same in other parts of this vast country.  We invented federalism to do just that.

Independence, liberty, and the love of freedom are being replaced with “I want what you have and since it isn’t ‘fair’ that you have it and I don’t, the government better make it right.”  Free health care.  Free cell phones.  Free lunch.  On this INDEPENDENCE DAY, let’s remember that nothing is free if the government is giving it to you.  All these things come at a very dear price: our freedom.  George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, the Minute Men, the Continental Army … Let’s not so carelessly throw away what what so many have fought for to make the United States the greatest place on earth — the “shining city upon the hill.”
