French privateers tried to silence her guns, they failed. The Barbary pirates tried and failed. Then the British gave it a go and failed. Now, some luxury condo owners in Charlestown gave it their best and they failed too.
The Boston City Council, in probably the best decision they will make in a decade, refused a petition to silence the guns of the USS Constitution. The oldest commissioned vessel in the world will continue to fire a salute when the flag is raised and a second when it is taken down for the night. The letter writers also complained that the national anthem was being played too loudly. It’s not clear where the council came down on this issue.
If I may be so bold to make a suggestion to these folks who find exhibitions of our martial spirit too much to bare. They will find themselves more at home in the People’s Republic of Cambridge.
