Susan Collins Signals Surrender on Impeachment Trial

I know this article is from Bloomberg and I don’t trust them anymore than you do, but it has a direct quote from Susan Collins concerning the Senate impeachment trial.

Here is her statement:

“I have had many discussions with some of my Republican colleagues on how we can adhere as closely as practical to the precedent for conducting the impeachment trial of President Clinton, which included as a third stage the decision on whether to call witnesses,” Collins said. “I am hopeful that we can reach an agreement on how to proceed with the trial that will allow the opportunity for witnesses for both the House managers and the President’s counsel if they choose to do so.”

Pelosi and Schiff ran the impeachment inquiry in a way that had zero respect for fairness or precedent. They ran it secret, refused to allow GOP House members to ask questions, have kept certain transcripts secret, and even refused to allow Trump to have counsel there. Isn’t it convenient that the Democrat House didn’t have to worry about past impeachment precedent while the the Republican Senate does.

I don’t know whether she will succeed in this endeavor, just like I don’t know whether McConnell is on board with this or not. I dislike anything that gives Democrats talking points or emboldens them, which Susan Collins seems to be an expert at.
