Remember before November when President Obama said he was opposed to the UN Arms Trade Treaty?
In a not so surprising turn of events, he changed his mind after he was re-elected. Not only that but his decision to appoint former Senator John Kerry as his Secretary of State solidifies that fact since Kerry has long been known to be a proponent of that treaty.
In case you don’t know much about this treaty essentially what is does is is requires nation’s that have signed it to created a national registry of gun owners and manufacturers.
This national registry is an affront to the Constitutionally protected rights of American citizens. Once again, the United Nations succeeds in jabbing at our national sovereignty.
The United Nationas General Assembly approved this treaty 154 to 3 on April 2, with the United States voting for its approval. There were 23 nations that abstained from the vote.
The next step is that this bill will come before the U.S. Senate who, in order to ratify this treaty, must get a two-thirds majority in favor of it.
Our Oklahoma Senator, Sen. Jim Inhofe, sponsored an amendment to the Senate budget bill that would effectivly prevent the United States from entering into a treaty that would circumvent Second Amendment rights. There are currently 46 Senators that refuse to support Sen. Inhofe’s amendment. Those Senators are listed below. They are all Democrats by the way (no big surprise) excluding King of Maine and Sanders of Vermont who are Independents.
Baldwin (Wis.), Baucus (Mont.), Bennet (Colo.), Blumenthal (Conn.), Boxer (Calif.), Brown (Ohio), Cantwell (Wash.), Cardin (Md.), Carper (Del.), Casey (Pa.), Coons (Del.), Cowan (Mass.), Durbin (Ill.), Feinstein (Calif.), Franken (Minn.), Gillibrand (N.Y.), Harkin (Iowa), Hirono (Hawaii), Johnson (S.D.), Kaine (Va.), Klobuchar (Minn.), Landrieu (La.), Leahy (Vt.), Levin (Mich.), McCaskill (Mo.), Menendez (N.J.), Merkley (Ore.), Mikulski (Md.), Murphy (Conn.), Murray (Wash.), Nelson (Fla.), Reed (R.I.), Reid (Nev.), Rockefeller (W.Va.), Schatz (Hawaii), Schumer (N.Y.), Shaheen (N.H.), Stabenow (Mich.), Udall (Colo.), Udall (N.M.), Warner (Va.), Warren (Mass.), Whitehouse (R.I.), and Wyden (Ore.).
Additionally, there is a resolution making its way through the Senate written by Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) that urges the President not to sign the treaty and further urging the Senate not to approve it. This resolution currently has 32 co-sponsors.
Hopefully, the Senate does not decide to attack the 2nd Amendment again and approve this treaty. Then again, even if the Senate does not approve it, Obama could always reject their decision (as he has done in the past) and just issue an Executive Order saying this nation has to follow the treaty. Wouldn’t put it past him since he has been known to continually violate the Constitution that he took an oath to protect time and time again.
I implore you to contact your state’s Senator and urge them to oppose ratification of this treaty. Your constitutional rights are at stake here!
