Central Planners of "Green" Fail While Private Research Succeeds

The Obama central planners are scratching their heads as to why their favored green tech companies are filing for bankruptcy left and right. Solyndra was just the tip of the Obama “green tech” iceberg. Many more green tech companies are now joining Solyndra in the bankruptcy court, such as Solar Trust of America and others. Even with a $2.1 billion conditional loan from the DOE, they were still unable to complete their solar project and technologies before going under. The only thing these companies are funding now are bankruptcy lawyers.

Private markets, when left alone by central planners of the government, will funnel private investor monies to the most promising technologies that will most likely result in a return on their investments. Despite the extreme road blocks to nuclear development and construction, there has been a lot of incredible breakthroughs that would put our electric grid in surplus for decades on end.

Transatomic Power has developed a modular salt water reactor design that uses high-level nuclear waste from primary nuclear reactors.  Bostinno – Leslie Dewan and Mark Massie, both nuclear engineering PhD students at MIT, started working on Transatomic Power, a nuclear reactor design startup, back in 2010, and incorporated it last year.

They say that:

Conventional nuclear reactors can utilize only about 3% of the potential fission energy in a given amount of uranium before it has to be removed from the reactor. Our design captures 98% of this remaining energy.

Right now in the world there are about 270,000 metric tons of high level waste that exists. It is possible to take that waste, put it into these reactors and produce enough electricity to power the entire world for 72 years. That is even taking into account increasing demand.  The Transatomic Power design is a compact modular 200 MWe molten salt reactor design that can be manufactured economically at a central location and transported by rail to the reactor site.

Just think about that for a minute.  We could have both primary and secondary nuclear reactors with practically no nuclear waste, as well as more electricity than we’d know what to do with.  This could free up the use of coal and oil/NG for other uses like Coal to Liquid Fuels and Natural Gas to Liquid Fuels.

What is Obama’s Energy Secretary Steven Chu answer to all of this? Screw the USA! – No new energy for you! Since Obama’s election to the POTUS, his actions confirm what we conservatives already know.

I really do hope that come the end of 2012, we will be rid of this nightmare of a President and the liberal majority in the US Senate. If so, a new dawn in the US of A will come. That is hope and change I can believe in.
