Obama Kowtows to Cuba, China

The Obama administration is opening up travel between the US and Cuba and is raising the limit on the maximum amount of money that can be sent to Cuba by Americans. The move will make it easier for cultural groups, schools and churches to visit Cuba.

American conservatives have assailed the action. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Republican of Miami, the new chair of the House foreign affairs committee said the changes “will not help foster a pro-democracy environment in Cuba. These changes will not aid in ushering in respect for human rights. And they certainly will not help the Cuban people free themselves from the tyranny that engulfs them. These changes undermine US foreign policy and security objectives and will bring economic benefits to the Cuban regime.”

Conservatives claim that the Obama administration delayed the changes until after the November election because Florida Democrats believed that the easing would have hurt them among the state’s large Cuban-American population that opposes the Castro regime.

An administration official defended the changes, saying, “We see these changes, in combination with the continuation of the embargo, as a way to enhance civil society in Cuba,” adding that increased contact between the people of the two nations “supports the independence of the Cuban people, making them less dependent on the Cuban state and on Cuban authorities.”

This statement is patent propaganda. The Obama administration is typically acting without regard for the fact that the Castro regime has never granted any rights whatsoever to the Cuban people in over 50 years in power and continues to use foreign remittances and income from foreign visitors to shore up Cuba’s devastated communist economy and its tyrannical government.

And the idea that we somehow can “enhance civil society in Cuba” or support “the independence of the Cuban people” is pure wordplay. There is no civil society and no independence in Cuba, and the Obama administration knows this. These are words that are being used as deceitful weapons.

After decades in which communism has been soft-soaped by American leftists in the media, the universities and in Washington political discourse America is again compromising with a communist regime while Castro is giving nothing at all in return except the usual hinted-at freedoms in the future, which will never come.

During the Cold War progressives in America similarly preached about better relations with the Soviet Union. But the only genuine response to one of the most heinous and longest-running human-rights deprivations in all of human history was to tear down the Berlin Wall and to dismantle the communist apparatus in Moscow, not seek accommodation with it.

Leftists were angered by the fall of communism in Europe and Ronald Reagan’s role in it. The Berlin Wall to them was supposed to be a permanent fixture on the world landscape, a sign of communist power and control and a model for future walls to keep people penned inside their “caring” nations.

Now Obama is giving in to Cuba. Yet where is the “compromise” from Havana? What are the “reforms” that Obama is rewarding?

There are none. Cuba is totalitarian and static. And for decades Cuba’s economy has been shored up by trade with permissive nations, while the Cuban government has caterwauled that the American embargo is what is really undermining its economy.

This is baloney. Cuba has a self-destroying communist system that was propped up for many years by subsidies from its impoverished political godfather in the Soviet Union while in the more recent past far-left tourists from Europe have flocked to Cuba to shore up the Castro regime. Yet the island’s economy still is devastated. So what is Obama’s easing going to accomplish?

Answer: Nothing at all, except to salvage the Castro regime by bolstering it with American dollars. And rest assured that the “cultural groups” and “churches” and “schools” that visit Cuba will be all leftist organizations wishing to support the regime and who will return to America with glowing accounts of the wonders of socialism.

Now Chinese president Hu Jintao is visiting America and is declaring that the US-dollar-dominated currency system is a “product of the past”. He ultimately wishes to make the Chinese yuan the global currency. This is a joke. China has been an economic power for about 10 years and only survives through enslavement of its people and its workers and technological theft from the West.

Obama will meet smiling with Hu but he should be confronting Hu about China‘s dismal human rights record, its history of technological piracy and the manipulation of its currency. Because Hu is simply the front man for a vicious communist apparatus that uses that nation’s 1 billion+ impoverished citizens as dispensable workers to create wealth for itself in the international trading system.

Hu now is saying that China’s manipulation of its currency is nothing for America to be concerned about, yet it is the main reason Chinese products are so cheap in global markets – because the Beijing government clearly is interfering in free trade. And that is why expected 2012 presidential candidate Donald Trump is rightly calling for a retaliatory 25% tariff on all Chinese imports into the US, which is the two-by-four across the forehead that will shake up the commissars in Beijing.

Hu said before coming to Washington that “We both stand to gain from a sound China-U.S. relationship, and lose from confrontation.” This is the type of uplifting pablum that draws in gullible Americans but really means that America should throw in the towel while the communists run away with all the goodies.

The Wall Street Journal reported online that:

‘Mr. Hu also offered a veiled criticism of efforts by the U.S. Federal Reserve to stimulate growth through huge bond purchases to keep down long-term interest rates, a strategy that China has loudly complained about in the past as fueling inflation in emerging economies, including its own. He said that U.S. monetary policy “has a major impact on global liquidity and capital flows and therefore, the liquidity of the U.S. dollar should be kept at a reasonable and stable level.”

Mr. Hu’s responses reflect a China that has grown more confident in recent years—especially in the wake of the global financial crisis, from which it emerged relatively unscathed.’ (end of excerpt)

Yes, unscathed certainly. Because China has an economy that is controlled from the top while the well-being of hundreds of millions of destitute citizens are not even accounted for.

And any concern over the ‘Federal Reserve’ or ‘capital flows’ is a feint. The American economy, along with the world economy, can be revived in rapid order by simply eliminating the five forces from the Obama/Democrat left that are strangling our free-enterprise system – excessive taxes and regulations; inordinate government mandates on business; labor union activism; out-of-control lawsuits and radical environmentalism.

This is all we need to make a better world. We should not go the other way with more accommodation to unrepentant dictatorships like Cuba and China. That only takes us in the opposite direction from where we should be headed.
