War on Christmas 2009

Christmas is blowing apart into two sections this year in an ongoing action being orchestrated by the political left. These are trends that have been brewing for years, but will be intensified in 2009.

First, with a pseudo-Christian president in the White House (we Americans “do not consider ourselves a Christian nation” he said in a speech in Cairo) the word “Christmas” is continuing to be cut out of virtually every public utterance from advertisements to news stories to personal greetings to public displays.

This is part of the attack on the Christian roots of America which is ongoing; is resulting in the downward spiral of our nation into nihilism, confusion and dependency; and is part of the secular left’s attempt to expunge any shred of wisdom, goodness and morality from our national dialogue. After all, if we started to demand decency, what would happen to the decadent entertainment industry, the liberals’ treasured money tree?

Every day we see the results of the eroding of the Christian ethos of order, love and peace – a society in chaos; families destroyed; widespread loneliness among people who cannot relate to others, most importantly the opposite sex; unhappy homosexuality, and even death; children not even knowing one of their parents; frivolity, indulgence and materialism.

While Christmas today has become a show of materialism, this is a corruption of the original message of Christianity which warns us in 1 Timothy 6:9-11 (King James Version):

9But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

So when we become obsessed with materialism on Christmas, it is a culture that goes against the real meaning of Christmas and is promoted by commercial interests. We would hope it is temporary and limited to December.

Many of those commercial interests themselves, however, have become highly anti-Christian in nature. Corporations have been infiltrated by leftist Scrooges who cancel ‘Christmas’ parties, ban the word ‘Christmas’ from the workplace and from the firm’s advertising, and seek to secularize the very holiday whose spending benefits them. In short to make it a materialist enterprise only.

Now we have the word ‘holiday’ used in the stead of ‘Christmas’. Yet the word ‘holiday’ really is a contraction of the words ‘holy day’. Indeed, the insistent and repetitive use of the word ‘holiday’ instead of ‘Christmas’  is allowing our sacred Christmas to come and go without even saying “Christmas” because the atheists have gained so much power over our public dialogue.

Yet what is their complaint?

They say they do not want to “offend” anyone by saying “Christmas”. Yet Christians are offended every minute by the secularists’ War on Christmas. And most Americans gladly will say “Christmas”.

Perhaps we should be more offended by the terrorist murder of 13 soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas by a violent Muslim, although many liberals are saying  that his Muslim background had nothing significant to do with the shooting. Yet if he had been a Christian who shot up a roomful of Muslims or homosexuals, there would be a media firestorm for years to come.

In Washington state, the capitol building had for decades hosted a Christmas tree and a menorah to celebrate Christmas and Chanukah. But in 2008 the atheists there switched to a new tactic that is gaining traction. Rather than opposing the Christian and Jewish displays, they insisted that atheism should be represented in the capitol building as well with a placard that denied the existence of any Supreme Being at all. It said:

‘There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds’.

This is the new slogan of the atheist left and is simply an extension of nihilism and environmentalist paganism which puts nature above man.

Religion ‘hardens hearts and enslaves minds’?

Note to atheists: World freedom today is based on American freedom which was built on Judaeo-Christian principles, while atheism is a system that has resulted in regimes guilty of the worst mass murders of all time. These regimes are called communism and fascism. Meanwhile the radicals of “our natural world” represent  environmentalism which is seeking to control all economic activity, to shut down our full and prosperous lives and to send us into a new age of privation.

This confrontation in the Washington state capitol has led to all religious expression being banned from the building, while the same also has happened in Pennsylvania. So the atheists have changed their tactic, advocating an agenda that their non-religion is equal to Christianity, and they are using it as a lever against Christianity. Because to allow their placard on the same level as a Christian display is to equate atheism with Christianity, which Christians find truly offensive. Because atheism is a blank that represents nothing.

So how about a Christian counterattack? Perhaps now Christians should start fighting back by demanding that Christmas and Easter be allowed equal funding and treatment in the public arena as Halloween is. After all, Halloween is a commemoration of religious paganism and is celebrated across the country in public parades and in public schools. Thus if equal treatment is not given to Christian celebration, then perhaps Halloween events should be canceled.

Fair enough…

In the second prong of the attack on Christmas, this year we are going to see the most intense Charity Culture ever in our history. And this is not to say that the media have not been pushing us that way since the modern media age dawned through endless government handouts and tales of woe that the media claim are a result of capitalism. But with our current economic straits, this will be intensified.

No, Christmas is not a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, say the leftists, and the hope and optimism that He entails, and to celebrate our plenty and our families, but a time to contemplate how guilty we feel about people who have less than we do.  And to think about the pagan Winter solstice. And to do anything but sing Christmas carols or buy a Christmas tree, but rather to sing generic winter songs and erect a ‘giving’ tree.

And despite the fact that people are worse off than ever this year because of Obama policies, the leftist media are going to act as if nothing is wrong with those policies. They simply will step up their focus on our “poor” population. In other words, why waste a crisis like this when you can use it to create more guilt?

So what will happen next year when things are much worse?

It is hard to say. But after conservatives win widely in the November 2010 elections as expected, the media will be hard-pressed to ignore Obama’s failed policies for Christmas 2010. But they will try.

Fortunately Christians and other level-headed people are fighting back against the secularists and winning. More towns are reinstating the “Christmas” parade and the “Christmas” tree and refusing to knuckle under to the Scrooges on the left. Indeed we must fight back. Even the website of the American Family Association is listing the names of companies that are ‘Christmas friendly’ and those that refuse to say the word. And it is about time we Christian Americans started standing up once again for who we really are – the best people on earth under the most giving God ever, in the freest nation in history.
