The discovery through satellite imagery of a new covert nuclear facility in Iran is reminiscent of the classic movie Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart. In the film, local officials reminiscent of the Keystone Cops discover that there is gambling going in the back room of Rick’s Café, and they are shocked, shocked, shocked…
Yet everyone in town knew there was gambling at Rick’s and the tongue-in-cheek shock has become something of a punch line. And now that we have clear evidence of Iran’s new nuke site, president Obama should dispense with his indignation and faux-shock and face up to the reality of the situation at hand.
Are we headed for another Iraq where evidence points to weapons of mass destruction, but there are none? Or are we headed for Armageddon, where terrorists are given access to nuclear materials while America diddles?
It looks like the latter unless Obama acts firmly. And from his actions during the first eight months of his presidency, he seems highly unlikely to do so.
Still Obama is shocked, just shocked! He said that the discovery of the new facility “continues a disturbing pattern of Iranian evasion” that jeopardizes global nonproliferation. Because at the same time the facility was being revealed, Obama was speechifying like a good pacifist that the world needs to rid itself of nuclear weapons. But Iran is no India or Israel. Iran is aggressive and dangerous to the United States, Europe and to Israel itself.
How did we get into this situation in the first place?
Here is a quote from the pro-American Shah of Iran, who was run out of his own country during the Jimmy Carter administration and replaced by radical Islamists:
“I did not know it then, perhaps I did not want to know? But it is clear to me now that the Americans wanted me out. Clearly this is what the human rights advocates in the State Department wanted. What was I to make of the Administration’s sudden decision to call former Under Secretary of State George Ball to the White House as an adviser on Iran? Ball was among those Americans who wanted to abandon me and ultimately my country.”
So we had an inept president in Carter who managed to do only one thing decisively – rid the world of the pro-Western Shah and allow Islamic radicalism to fill the void, a decision that still is reverberating today even louder than ever. And now Obama is shocked that this renegade regime is pursuing nuclear weapons without regard for his precious nuclear-free world.
All Americans who wish to protect our ally Israel should rejoice that someone is not shocked at Iran’s actions. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said boldly in his September 24 speech to the United Nations:
Nearly 62 years ago, the United Nations recognized the right of the Jews, an ancient people 3,500 years-old, to a state of their own in their ancestral homeland. I stand here today as the Prime Minister of Israel, the Jewish state, and I speak to you on behalf of my country and my people.
The United Nations was founded after the carnage of World War II and the horrors of the Holocaust. It was charged with preventing the recurrence of such horrendous events. Nothing has undermined that central mission more than the systematic assault on the truth.
Yesterday the President of Iran stood at this very podium, spewing his latest anti-Semitic rants. Just a few days earlier, he again claimed that the Holocaust is a lie.
This is precisely the kind of unequivocal rhetoric that Obama should engage in, but never will.
Meanwhile Iran says that it will welcome UN nuclear inspectors. We know what this means, that Iran will play the usual shell game with the inspectors while Russia, China, Venezuela and the rest of the anti-American mob does everything it can to ease any ill effects that sanctions would have on Iran, a nation that is highly vulnerable to blockades of gasoline, food and consumer goods.
Said Obama “Iran’s leaders must now choose — they can live up to their responsibilities and achieve integration with the community of nations. Or they will face increased pressure and isolation, and deny opportunity to their own people.”
But this is just huffing and puffing and Iran remains uncowed, just as the Islamists watched enthusiastically as Jimmy Carter laid the groundwork for them to re-take Tehran.
Obama is both weak and pliable. And national weakness is not telegraphed by one or two events, but by a series of judgments and decisions that eventually morph into a pattern. Already Obama has withdrawn the fixed-radar shield plan from Poland and the Czech Republic which would have defended against Iranian missiles; cut other missile defense spending; has proposed closing the Guantanamo detention facility; and is waffling on Afghanistan. In speeches, he often seems more interested in criticizing America than our brutal enemies. This all from a president who said in the campaign that he would consider invading Pakistan(!!?)
So the Iranians now have seen the difference between Obama talking and campaigning, and Obama acting. And clearly they see that he does not threaten them at all.
Said Netanyahu fearlessly about Iran and its president:
A mere six decades after the Holocaust, you give legitimacy to a man who denies that the murder of six million Jews took place and pledges to wipe out the Jewish state. What a disgrace! What a mockery of the charter of the United Nations! Perhaps some of you think that this man and his odious regime threaten only the Jews. You’re wrong.
History has shown us time and again that what starts with attacks on the Jews eventually ends up engulfing many others. This Iranian regime is fueled by an extreme fundamentalism that burst onto the world scene three decades ago after lying dormant for centuries.
In the past thirty years, this fanaticism has swept the globe with a murderous violence and cold-blooded impartiality in its choice of victims. It has callously slaughtered Moslems and Christians, Jews and Hindus, and many others. Though it is comprised of different offshoots, the adherents of this unforgiving creed seek to return humanity to medieval times.
That is why the greatest threat facing the world today is the marriage between religious fanaticism and the weapons of mass destruction. The most urgent challenge facing this body is to prevent the tyrants of Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Are the member states of the United Nations up to that challenge? Will the international community confront a despotism that terrorizes its own people as they bravely stand up for freedom?
Netanyahu for president… of the United States!
Obama seems not to hear the entreaties of our allies to act boldly before it is too late and seems strangely deaf to the threats from our enemies. We already had our first terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11/2001, the June 1 murder of Pvt. William Long outside an Army-Navy recruiting center in West Little Rock by an Islamic convert., Arkansas
If Obama seems unwilling to even act defensively by maintaining missile defense spending levels, for instance, there is not much hope for his acting offensively or helping Israel to bomb Iran‘s nuke facilities, which seems the only way out of this box. The hoary voice of Jimmy Carter even has risen in this debate. Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter’s national security advisor, even has suggested that any offensive strikes launched from Israel on Iran be shot down over Iraqi airspace… by America.
Obama would do well to list to Mr. Netanyahu rather than to his pacifist flank that is nothing more than a throwback to Jimmy Carter’s twisted mindset that the bad guys are on our side. If Obama continues to play a lay-down game with Iran, there will be hell to pay. We already have paid it once with Carter. And this time around, the price will be much, much higher.
