Let's All Volunteer

President Obama and his wife appeared at a United We Serve community service event on Thursday. They are continuing a long tradition in asking Americans to volunteer to help out those less fortunate. But in Obama’s highly polarized and partisan administration, you can expect that this call will become politicized.

Americans are great at volunteering. Boy Scouts, Little League, charity fund raisers, volunteer fire department… But Obama wants to go beyond that and ask us to do more and more and more for free. This is socialism. Already many Americans are working for the government (to pay taxes) almost half the year.

This appeal to volunteerism is targeted largely at young people who have lots of time and energy for all sorts of causes. But when you look at how the volunteer system is manipulated in both public and private schools – which both generally advocate a left-wing agenda – you can see that volunteering is intended to further indoctrinate students into socialism.

You can expect these young people to help in a soup kitchen without ever questioning why people are homeless; to join a crusade against so-called ‘global warming’ without ever questioning if it exists; to clean up trash in a river without ever considering how environmentalists are killing jobs nationwide and disrupting our energy supply; to serve people with AIDS without ever considering how they became infected; to build houses for ‘the poor’ without asking why ‘the poor’ are not helping to build those houses.

Who could forget the video clip of Obama painting a wall in a homeless shelter. Where were the homeless to do the painting?

The volunteering student then assumes that if he/she has a home and three meals a day that anyone with less is “poor” and thus he/she will never ask any questions about serving them. He/she simply will be convinced that “the poor” deserve whatever they can get. And in their volunteering, young people will come to perceive self-reliance as an anomaly and charity as the way to build a better society. This is intended to turn the student to liberalism.

Volunteering also will make further demands on people of all ages who are already working really hard and paying large amounts of taxes to the government. So volunteering becomes an extra ‘tax’ of time and money on people who already are paying a lot, i.e., they’ve already “volunteered” much of their income. This will affect conservatives most because conservatives are the people who take the least from the government, who already statistically give a larger percentage of their income to charity than liberals, and who now are being asked to give more through volunteerism.

Here is columnist George Will writing about charitable giving:

Sixteen months ago, Arthur C. Brooks, a professor at Syracuse University, published Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism. The surprise is that liberals are markedly less charitable than conservatives.

If many conservatives are liberals who have been mugged by reality, Brooks, a registered independent, is, as a reviewer of his book said, a social scientist who has been mugged by data. They include these findings:

*Although liberal families’ incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227).

*Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.

*Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush.

*Bush carried 24 of the 25 states where charitable giving was above average.

*In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.

*People who reject the idea that “government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality” give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition.

Does anyone remember Al Gore’s paltry charitable contributions of a few hundred dollars when Dick Cheney gave more than $8 million?

According to Nicholas Kristof writing in the New York Times:

Americans give sums to charity equivalent to 1.67 percent of G.N.P., according to a terrific new book, Philanthrocapitalism by Matthew Bishop and Michael Green. The British are second, with 0.73 percent, while the stingiest people on the list are the French, at 0.14 percent.

Oh, those French… But such good bread! And so liberal!!

Now a government agency like AmeriCorps is said to be experiencing a boom in recruitment under Obama and is included under the rubric of “volunteering”. But it is not volunteering. AmeriCorps is a government-run, government-funded agency that has stipends of up to $1,000 a month. So AmeriCorps really is introducing young people to a life in government employment.

So let’s now consider all these core Democrat constituency groups and their track record on volunteering their own free time to others:

The idle poor: These are people who are always on the receiving end of government largesse. Many are lazy and ignorant and manipulative; or they are given endless subsidies and nothing is expected of them so they don’t lift a finger. They rarely, if ever, will volunteer their time, even though many of them are completely idle 24/7.

Labor unions: Oh, boy, here’s a group of people known for giving away lots of free time… Yeah, right… People in labor unions get mad just because they have to work at all! Consider the unionized pilots at American Airlines who earned $225,000 a year in pay and benefits in 2007. Yet they now are demanding a 50% pay increase. You won’t be seeing many of them, or any other union members, at the soup kitchen.

Democrat politicians: These are the people who are milking the economy for every penny that they can get and then telling us how we must all “volunteer” to make the world better. They use their political positions to garner taxpayer wealth and to get more wealth for socialism in general, which lines their pockets and increases their power. The only time you will see a Democrat politician volunteering is when it is done for political show, like when the news cameras are running.

Unionized public school teachers: The radicals who run our schools work fewer hours than virtually any other people in the American workforce, usually less than 9 months a year and around 34 hours a week according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They also make more per hour, about $35 an hour average. Couldn’t they “volunteer” a little more on their day jobs by making sure kids get educated? They are usually taking the summer off, often retiring at age 52, or demanding higher pay and getting all mad when they only get 5% a year and not 10%. Like all union members, they don’t give much of their time for nothin’.

Government workers: These are the some of the least ambitious members of the American workforce. They get the best pay, benefit and pension packages of all workers in America (46% more salary than the average private-sector worker!) and retire in comfort at the expense of the taxpayers who work longer hours and more years to pay those taxes. They aren’t going to waste a lot of time at the homeless shelter. They’ve got golf to play!

The elite liberal rich: These are people who raise money at cocktail parties and fundraising dinners, appear at volunteer events for a few gratuitous hours (like Jimmy Carter at Habitat for Humanity) and then retire to their posh homes, waiting for their magic to make the world better. Then of course they dash for the next day’s newspaper to see their picture pounding nails or painting a wall.

College professors: Oh, yeah, right. These are some of the laziest people in America, 95% Democrat, they work about 6 months a year maximum, take sabbaticals every few years because they’re so tired, and volunteer zilch unless it is something that directly affects their job or income. Community college professors in Houston were reported recently to have salaries of $80,000 annually, pretty good for half a year of government work.

Obama and his wife talk as if they “volunteered” as community organizers in Chicago. This is nonsense. Obama was using his position as a CO to build political power using government money. It was on-the-job training for him for a future in politics.

And remember the really big truth about all this – that the wealth that is needed to sustain charitable work and to build Habitat for Humanity homes all comes from the hard-working people of America who get no credit at all. But the publicity mongers like Jimmy Carter and his friends are out in front of the train, collecting accolades and posing for the cameras.

You know…. “volunteering”…
